Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Advanced Computing, this position is responsible for performing and coordinating architecture, design, development, operation and maintenance of applications in support of projects and infrastructure related to WCMC-Q Research programs and activities.

- Perform in-depth evaluation of research data and information to solve complex problems. Proactively make technical recommendations to senior staff and manager. Engage in document planning, design, and issue resolution.
- Work closely with researchers to obtain user requirements and propose software architecture, algorithms and project plans.
- Support standards, guidelines, and methods through use of data definitions, diagrams and data modeling tools and techniques
- Design, develop and deploy new and existing research informatics systems, including system testing and response to user feedback.
- Evaluate and test third party bioinformatics data management and analysis tools for the interpretation, analysis, data-mining, synthesis and integration of large biomedical, genomic, proteomic, metabolomic data sets.
- Plan project requirements and work with manager to allocate resources. Update project plans, proactively raise and recommend resolution of technical issues.
- Ensure that designs meet performance and robustness requirements; design and deploy high-performance computing (HPC) solutions through application optimization and parallelization efforts.
- Create innovative and intuitive interfaces that allow the extraction, reporting and display of data within a robust pipeline producing tabular and graphical views within a client and or web environment.
- Keep abreast of developments in the research computing field and recommends new technology and new services applicable to WCMC-Q research informatics infrastructure, through continuing education, professional reading, listservs, participation in conferences, workshops and professional groups.
- Maintain details of methodology used for developed applications and source code with inline comments in CVS. K. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

- A bachelors in Computer Science or Engineering, along with 4 to 5 years experience in programming and developing research applications.
- Strong working knowledge of a several programming languages (Perl, C, Python, C++, Ruby, Java, PHP, Javascript, C#), web development frameworks (Rails, Django, jQuery, .NET), and database technologies (MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server) on Linux and Windows.
- Strong interest in contributing to biological research with clinical applications. Prior involvement or interest in bioinformatics or medical genomics domain a plus
- Knowledge of biomedical concepts and experience in scientific or clinical research and familiarity with commercial and open-source software in the field is preferred
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Good organizational and project planning skills.
- Flexible, team player able to work effectively with individuals with different backgrounds and levels of expertise.
- Dependable, self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Skills in math/statistical modeling and data analysis using R or MATLAB is a plus.
