Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

• Provides teaching assistance during workshop and laboratory sessions
• Assists in the development and maintenance of teaching materials
• Demonstrates the use of machines, tools and equipment within the laboratory
• Supports faculty and students in the design, planning and execution of student projects as required
• Receives, installs and maintains laboratory equipment and supplies
• Maintains a schedule of preventative maintenance for all equipment and keeps adequate manuals and maintenance logs for equipment and parts
• Controls the distribution of consumable materials and ensures adequate inventory levels for supplies within the laboratory
• Maintains systems and procedures to track borrowed equipment and tools
• Observes and reinforces safety and housekeeping procedures and protocol within the laboratory
• May devise, fabricate and assemble new or modified mechanical components for products such as industrial machinery or equipment and measuring instruments if required in the discipline
• Contributes to the development of the organization by observing and implementing system-wide policies and procedures
• Travels to attend meetings, workshops and conferences as required
• Develops an awareness of and respect for the customs and cultures
• May perform teaching duties as required
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor

Requirements

• A minimum 2 years of relevant hands-on experience in a laboratory or workshop
• Practical workshop skills as evident by knowledge of instruments and devices, relevant chemicals used within the laboratory, and other workshop tools and equipment
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated knowledge of safety protocols
• A high degree of computer literacy and demonstrated ability to integrate technology in the workplace
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated competency to interact with people at all levels of the organization
• The ability to work effectively as part of a team in a multi-cultural environment and to cope with pressure in a positive manner while working to deadlines within a busy and demanding environment
• A demonstrated willingness to engage in professional development activities in order to develop and improve new and current skills, and to adapt to the evolving needs of the organization
