Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

The Manager is responsible for the Management of the CSSD Providing professional help and guidance to technicians and assistant technicians. He ensures that the department operates efficiently providing sterile supplies to all areas and units within the hospital.
1. Supports and participates in the development of the philosophy, objectives and policies of the hospitals and interprets them to the staff in the CSSD
2. Formulate, prepares, writes, then implements and evaluates the policies of the department.
3. Work closely with the Unit Managers and Nursing Supervisor in the day to day operation of the Hospital.
4. Supervises:
4.1 The receiving of instruments and other materials for sterilizing both by the autoclaving and Sterrad plasma method.
4.2 The packing and sealing of instruments.
4.3 The loading, distribution of goods in the autoclaves.
5. Ensures adequate safety measures are observed in the handling of equipment.
6. Is responsible for the ordering of consumables for the department that they meet the hospital need.
7. Prepares a yearly inventory of stock and its replacement.
8. Implements new product evaluation. Reports result to Director of Nursing on a timely manner.
9. Observes cost containment practices, evaluates and recommends appropriate inventory levels.
10. Provide input and recommendation for preparation and implementation of capital and operational budget.
11. Inspect the instruments on a regular basis and reports any loses, repairs and replacement that may be needed to the Nursing Director.
12. Identifies present and potential needs of the department assists in formulating courses of action to meet needs. Prepares the monthly Rotation for staff, vacation and their daily assignment of duties.
13. Holds a weekly staff meeting.
14. Maintains daily, monthly and quarterly statistics.
15. Prepares monthly reports for submission to the Nursing Director.
16. Provides input to determine manpower for the department.
17. Monitors the performance of the Technician, Aide/Porter, and Cleaner in the department.
18. Ensures regular maintenance is performed on all equipment and communicate with the Biomedical/Maintenance Engineering.
19. Follow the hospital Infection Control recommendation.

Requirements

High School Diploma, and Preferably Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST)
A minimum of 3 years current, full-time experience as a CSSD Technician in a mid- to large-sized acute-care hospital

Material Sterilization
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills of correct function monitoring and safe use of washers, steam sterilizers and Sterrad machine.
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills of correct function and maintenance of all items provided by department, instruments and equipment.
• Maintain a proper environment according to International Standards for handling and storage of sterile items.
• Maintain proper personal hygiene requirements for working in C.S.S.D
Stock Control
• Adequate stock levels are maintained.
• Aware of outdates and stock rotation requirements.
Quality Improvement
• To participate in quality improvement processes and activities and be accountable for following work routines, policies and procedures to the expected standard.

The Senior Technician, in addition, is:
• Expected to ensure Quality improvements are successfully implemented.
• Undertake audits of CSSD functions and assist with the formulation and implementation of action plans.
Performance Development
• Continues to pursue / enhance own knowledge and skills appropriate to the area of work.
• Develop competency in necessary clinical techniques appropriate to practice.
• Participates in annual performance review and personal professional development plan.
• Meets Al Zahra Hospital mandated skill competency requirements, such as, but not limited to; fire, evacuation and health and safety training.
Communication and Team work
• Actively participates in staff meetings
• Contributes to a supportive environment for all those in the Theatre team
• Communicates with patients, families, colleagues and visitors in a professional manner
Health and Safety
• To take all practicable steps to ensure personal safety, and the safety of others, while at work, according to the department's and the Hospital's health and safety policies, procedures and systems.
• Adheres to current infection control practices maintaining a safe environment for both patients and staff
• Takes initiative and identifies reports and resolves issues that may cause harm to themselves or others in the organization
