This is an exciting opportunity to join the British Museums growing Zayed National Museum (ZNM) Project team in a brand new role. The Collections Development Officer will support the development of the collections of the Zayed National Museum. They will be responsible for coordinating activities relating to material to be sourced within the UAE (both acquisitions and loans) for the ZNM. This includes supporting the pre- and post-acquisition processes and paperwork for all purchases, donations and loans, as well as hands-on work with the management of collections.

This role is based in Abu Dhabi, but regular travel to London may be required.

Key areas of responsibility:
1. With the ZNM project curators and collections team, to identify sources of potential acquisitions and loans for the collections of the ZNM from within the UAE.
2. To work with curatorial colleagues to determine the provenance of proposed collections material for the ZNM in line with the ZNM acquisitions and loans policies and international conventions, and work with the ZNM Collections Development Manager and Acquisitions Manager to ensure sufficient documentation is in place.
3. To work with TCA-Abu Dhabi to ensure that appropriate conservation assessments are carried out on all potential acquisitions and loans.
4. To work with the Acquisitions Manager to produce reports on potential acquisitions for TCA-Abu Dhabi stakeholders, and maintain an effective paperwork audit trail.
5. To assist with identifying the requirements and costs of transportation, conservation, storage and display of all acquired and borrowed material and providing hands-on assistance with collections management as required.
6. To assist with documentation of all UAE acquisitions and loans on relevant ZNM Project databases and digital assets systems.

Requirements

Educated to degree level or equivalent, the successful post holder will have an excellent knowledge of museum documentation and collections management issues. Awareness of the history of the Gulf along with proficiency in Arabic is desirable. Excellent organisation, administration and data handling skills are essential as is proven ability to meet deadlines and communicate well both written and verbally. The successful post holder will be able to demonstrate good judgment and sensitivity to reputational risk.
