The Role

The Role

The Health, Safety and Environment Director is responsible for the strategy, creation, development, implementation and administration of comprehensive health, safety and environmental programs and policies for the University and the community. The Director is responsible for the assessment and management of environmental and occupational health and safety risk elements, advising University leadership of the acceptability of such risk, ensuring compliance with all applicable environmental and occupational health regulations. The Director is responsible for the operation of KAUST Medical Clinic, primary care, and associated medical services.

Major Responsibilities

• Promote the importance of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) and create a University culture that integrates health and safety across all functions.

• Direct HSE functions that includes Fire and Emergency Services, Fire Protection, Community and Laboratory Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Hazardous Waste and Environmental Protection.

• Drive the emergency and crisis management planning for Campus and Community.

• Direct and oversee hazardous waste management and disposal procedures.

• Direct the review and assessment of all KAUST Fire protection systems.

• Manage and oversee custody chain of chemical, biological, and radiological agents on campus.

• Direct the Medical Services strategy and implementation by assuring that the highest added value of medical services is efficiently provided to the KAUST community.

• Management of risk to ensure KUAST leadership that policies, regulations, enforcement and safety procedures are in place.

• Works with the research community, through safety committees and informally, in regulatory compliance through effective engagement with all stakeholders.

• Will engage with the community members and serve on various committees with an aim at understanding the needs and refinement of required HSE policies and procedures.

• Will be responsible for reviewing and approving HSE related parameters for laboratory and building improvements. This will include minor work and Capital projects.

• Direct and administer all outsource service vendor contracts and closely manage the annual operating budget for the Department.

• Will be responsible for a high performance organization through mentoring, development, goal setting and measuring Key Performance Indicators and success factors

• Provide executive level information memos and presentations on the full range of department responsibilities, initiatives, plans and actions.

• Understands customer service and follow through with concerns from various University Departments.

• Promote and support the academic and research missions of the university.

• Ability to take complex information, distill it, and communicates in understandable and relatable terms.



Technical Skills

• Should have an excellent command of oral and written English Language.

• Should have solid experience in all Health, Safety & Environment activities and organizational skills.

• Solid knowledge and experience in different types of Health and Safety technologies.

• Should be able to exhibit self-control, mild manner and courtesy when dealing with all members of KAUST communities.

• Ability to communicate and train multinational groups.

• Demonstrated leadership skills within a consensus building organization culture and effectiveness coaching team members and inspiring teamwork both within his/her direct areas of responsibility and laterally among other work teams.

• Strong problem solving skills. Individual must be capable of accurately assessing needs, maintaining a calm business demeanor and taking quick action to resolve issues.

• Clear and effective oral written communication skills are critical; as is the ability to promote the open flow of information by actively soliciting and listening to the ideas of others.

Non-Technical Skills or Attributes

• Proven ability and commitment to being discreet, tactful, timely and operating judiciously when addressing internal and external customer needs.

Diplomatic interpersonal skills which allow successful candidate to effectively relate to all levels of associates and vendors.

• Specialized HSE advance training/certifications (CSP, CIH,) safety management, managerial training) is preferred.

• Excellent use of PC, Microsoft applications and internet.

Required Education

• B.S. Chemical Engineer, BS in Science degree, B.S. Industrial Engineering or similar technical B.S. degree. MBA or advanced degree preferred.

Required Experience

• Over 15 years Health, Safety and Environment Management experience in multi site or Similar Complex setting.
