Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

Direct, review, evaluate, and analyze work environments and design programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical,physical, and biological agents or ergonomic factors. May conduct inspections and enforce adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals.

Principal Accountabilities:
- Demonstrates knowledge and application of the HMC mission, vision and values
- Sets strategic direction of occupational and environmental safety
- Establishes safety program infrastructure
- Oversees the implementation of process improvement initiatives
- Provide internal consulting and training services to enhance job performance and operations within the HMC hospitals and Departments
- Develop and maintain the occupational safety planning that will underpin the program and assist with monitoring its achievements
- Chair and lead a group that will assist with the development of safety policies and programs and with implementing of these policies within all HMC workplace
- Investigates adequacy of ventilation, exhaust equipment, lighting, and other conditions, which may affect employee health, comfort, or efficiency
- Arrange and organizing accreditation for safety management for OHS
- Assist Executive director in the managerial issue for Fire Safety and Environmental safety
- Recommend measures to ensure maximum employee protection
- Collaborates with engineers and physicians to institute control and remedial measures for hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions of equipment
- Participates in educational meetings to instruct employees in matters pertaining to occupational health and prevention of accidents
- Prepares reports including observations, analysis of contaminants, and recommendation for control and correction of hazards
- Reviews physicians' reports and conducts worker studies to determine if diseases or illnesses are job related
- Prepares documents to be used in legal proceedings and gives testimony in court proceedings
- Uses cost-benefit analysis to justify money spent
- Complies with HMC policies and procedures; and in particular infection control, safety and quality management

Requirements

- Must have a Bachelor's degree in safety management or related field and be a qualified Fire Engineer (NFPA). A Masters degree in a relevant field would be advantageous
- Must have comprehensive health and safety knowledge gained through working in a construction environment for 10 years with at least 3 of these years being in a senior management position. Healthcare experience is preferred and it would be an advantage to have experience in working on similar hospital projects. Having an awareness and understanding of chemical hazards and hazardous waste disposal is also desirable
- English proficiency both written and verbal is essential with Arabic language being a distinct advantage due to the communication required with Civil Defence and other authorities

Required Certification:
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals BCSP OR
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) OR
- Certified Associate Industrial Hygienist (CAIH) from American Board of Industrial Hygiene ABIH
- OR equivalent.
