The RoleThe RoleAn ER physician must have a broad spectrum of knowledge he/ She must identify possible causes of the many symptoms a patient can present with and must be able to treat many conditions. ER physicians resuscitate patients and perform pelvic, neurological and other examinations. They order laboratory tests and radiographic examinations, such as X-rays, sonograms or ultrasounds. An ER physician may request a consult by a specialist (such as cardiology or general surgery), may stabilize a patient and send him directly to an intensive care unit, may send a patient directly to a surgical team for emergency surgery and may send a patient directly to labor and delivery. An ER physician may occasionally deliver a baby himself. Training After completing 4 years of medical or osteopath school, a physician interested in practicing emergency medicine must complete an emergency medicine residency program. These programs are typically 3 years in length. The residency provides comprehensive training in cardiac intensive care, emergency obstetrics and gynecology care, emergency labor and delivery care, pediatric emergency medicine, trauma, surgical intensive care, medical intensive care, neonatal intensive care, anesthesiology and toxicology. Training includes laboratory exercises and simulated patient care. The physician also must pass certification examinations in advanced life support methods. |
