General Counsel

Job description / Role

- In conjunction with the Executive Management, contribute to the formulation of the business strategy in line with the companys vision, mission and corporate governance;

- Recommend the legal departmental budget and monitor financial performance versus the budget;

- Advise top management on legal implications of new projects, investments, including joint ventures;

- Manage the assessment of risk before entering into contracts or legal obligations;

- Lead the drafting, review and negotiation of contracts and agreements;

- Ensure that the companys rights vis--vis third parties are adequately protected and initiate litigation or court process where necessary;

- Manage the protection of the organisations intellectual property rights including registration of trademarks locally and internationally and copyright and institution of proceedings where appropriate;

- Ensure compliance to all relevant quality, health, safety and environmental management policies, procedures and controls across the department;

- Develop and maintain effective relationships with all relevant external/internal entities such as partners, various government regulatory authorities, service providers, key stakeholders.

Requirements

- Bachelor in Law from a recognised University in the UK, US or France.

- 10 years of legal experience in a commercial environment, preferably with at least 5 years in a senior management position. (Experience within the manufacturing industry is highly appreciated.)

- Experience with maritime and shipping law is highly desirable.

- Experience of managing relationships with local and international law firms.

- Fluency in Arabic and English.

- Knowledge of local laws and regulations.
