Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

Department: Library

Responsible for: Employees and products/services of the Library

Purpose: To assume leadership role of planning, directing and managing the Center’s large expanding library. Build on existing resources and library programs with the goal of producing the pre-eminent regional library focused on economic, political and social issues pertinent to the UAE, Gulf and broader Arab world.


Key Result Areas: Supervision and general management of the library and library staff, acquiring and implementing library systems, creating and implementing library procedures, continue with ambitious acquisition agenda


Role / Responsibilities:

1) Manages the successful establishment of a world-class library and assumes responsibility for ensuring a smooth transition to a new facility
2) Overseas management of library staff – including initiating strong recruitment, retention and training programs
3) Designs & implements an overall strategic plan for the development of the library
4) Manages fast-paced and ambitious goals (as laid-out by senior management)
5) Evaluates, establishes and implements technological needs of the library (such as cataloging requirements)
6) Creates effective cross-departmental working relationships and assists both in-house researchers, senior management and outside scholars with library queries.

Key Performance Indicators (KPI):

-- Ability to establish an “infrastructure” and lead a rapidly growing library – including building and implementing systems, work process and recruiting staff
-- Oversees a smooth and successful transition to a new library facility
-- Uses technical/professional knowledge to design and implement successful library programs
-- Applies management expertise in supervising / training staff, organizing, scheduling and allocating / delegating work assignments
-- Displays efficient planning and implementation of short—and long term goals
-- Ability to react efficiently to new challenges and needs of senior management in a dynamic and past-paced work environment
-- Critically understands the full process of library management and copes with complex and varied responsibilities
-- Establishes library goals and effectively sees them through to completion

Requirements

Essential Competencies

Education / Qualifications:
Masters or bachelors degree in library science or related information/management field or social science

Experiences:
-- 10 – 15 years in library management
-- 5-7 years in a senior management / supervisor capacity

Knowledge / Skills / Attributes:
--Strong knowledge of library management and evidence of ability to “create” and lead a very large specialized bi-lingual library
--Knowledge of the specialized subjects relevant to the Center
--Strong management, team and business-process building ability


Desirable Competencies


Education / Qualifications:
PhD. / Masters degree in library science or related information/management field or social science

Experiences:
-- 10 – 15 years in library management
-- 5-7 years in a senior management / supervisor capacity

Knowledge / Skills / Attributes:
--Strong knowledge of library management and evidence of ability to “create” and lead a very large specialized bi-lingual library
--Knowledge of the specialized subject maters covered by the Center
--Knowledge of the specialized subjects relevant to the Center
--Strong management, team and business-process building ability
--Knowledge of both Arabic & English
