Head of Specialist Engineer - Bath/London

BuroHappold is an international practice of multidisciplinary consulting engineers with a worldwide reputation for innovation and quality. The company is widely acknowledged to be at the leading edge of the industry and is behind numerous complex and high profile projects around the world

We are currently recruiting for Head of Specialist Engineering to be based in our Bath or London office.

This role would provide the technical direction, leadership and management for BuroHappolds: Security, ICT, Controls and Audio Visual specialist engineering consultancy. This group have been involved with numerous high profile projects, including the Olympic Stadium Transformation, The Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi, Olaya Metro Station in Riyadh, and the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

This key leadership role, working alongside our head of physical security as part of our management team, requires an individual who has a determined commitment to commercial performance as well as staff mentoring and development. This capability would be alongside their already proven engineering expertise that would stretch our boundaries and break new ground. We are looking for a dynamic individual who would:

- Develop and represent our integrated offering to our clients across these disciplines,
- Have experience in, and grow our systems integration capability across our key international sectors: Aviation, Cultural, Sport & leisure, Commercial and Government.
- Nurture our core capability of delivering turnkey complex integrated system solutions.
- Through innovation and leadership, stretch our capability by identifying new market sectors - including Resilience.
- Provide group management and development

The role also involves responsibility for the Groups market knowledge of specialist systems, leading to new business development activities, together with providing proactive project leadership. This will be achieved through:

Exceptional leadership of projects, individuals, and teams as a whole.
Maintaining and developing the highest standards of technical quality; continuously developing the department through innovation and creativity.

Operations of the role:

Key member of the group management team - to support, add value, agree key strategic goals.

Lead, develop and grow the existing Security & Comms team - both UK and in our international offices.

Support the work winning activities of the group by identifying and pursuing new markets

Business Development

Dynamic focus on existing and new business in the electronic security market; broadening coverage of high quality clients and projects across a range of market sectors.
Leveraging existing BuroHappold relationships, identifying and following up opportunities.
Promoting BuroHappold integrated services to potential Clients.
Reviewing financial and technical submissions/proposals; attending interviews.
Developing and maintaining key client relationships under all circumstances, maximizing opportunities for repeat business.

Project Management

Project Director for appropriate group projects, taking ownership for sustained and productive client relationships.
Directing multiple projects across the group, taking responsibility for the engineering solutions while ensuring financial success.
Delivering a risk managed portfolio; working within agreed capital lock up parameters.
Working within BHs corporate structure - policies/planning and ensuring key project goals are met.
Advising project leaders in scoping projects and following corporate structure i.e. projects office.

Team Leadership

Mentoring Associate Directors, Associates, Principal Engineers and Senior Engineers so that meaningful delegation can apply within the team.
Ensure latest learning and development initiatives are implemented as required within the team.
Champion delivery of the companys Performance and Development Review (PDR) process in support of all the above.
Support the management of reward and recognition of the team.
The post holder must at all times carry out his/ her duties with due regard to the BuroHappold Diversity Policy.
Leadership of the electronic security consultancy team, across multiple offices.
Contribute to team and project financial and resource planning exercises as instructed by the Group Director, including compliance with Projects Office requirements.

Technical Leadership

Participate in, lead and ensure delivery of the process of high-level project technical/quality reviews of specifications, reports and drawings produced by the team.
Maintain the skills balance within the group in line with the defined strategic direction.
Direct the engineering design excellence within the team and ensure dissemination of best in class to rest of the Discipline Development Group (DDG)/Practice.

Requirements

Essential Experience:
- Recognised specialist systems (Security, Communications, Building controls and AV) integration experience.
- Experience of developing and leading teams on international projects.
- Proficient at operating in a global matrix organisation.
- Excellent communicator (verbal, written, listening), and confident and competent at presenting to varied audiences.

Desirable Experience:
- Track record of business development in the specialist systems consultancy market.
- Experience of working in a global matrix organisation.
- Fluent in English, preferably with some ability in an international second language.
- Overseas work experience

Qualifications:
- Ideally a Chartered Engineer
- Degree qualified in a relevant discipline.
- Member of a relevant professional body e.g. RSES/ICE/CIBSE/IET.

- Cultural awareness, capable of operating efficiently across geographies.
