Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

Main Purpose of the Job:

• Maintain and provide consistency across the programme.
• Develop and maintain a Sustainability Management System to recognised international standards (with emphasis on the Global Sustainability Assessment System) and to ensure this is implemented across the programme.
• Provide technical sustainability advice and guidance to the programme to ensure sustainability issues are managed efficiently and all requirements (legal and other) are complied with.

Key Responsibilities/ Duties:

The Head of Sustainability will:

• Develop a Sustainability Management System (SMS) which covers all activities undertaken by the programme. Integral to the SMS will be sustainability management via the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) for projects.
• Develop and maintain the sustainability sections of PMDS to ensure international standards are complied with and that the system is applicable to programme activities.
• Deliver a programme wide sustainability audit schedule.
• Manage sustainability non-conformities, identify trends and areas of good and bad practices (including KPI reporting).
• Report sustainability performance to senior management and the PWA.
• Review Environmental Sustainability Project Plans (ESPP) and other relevant sustainability plans and guidance used throughout the programme.
• Review tender submissions for DCSC and Contractor sustainability competencies.
• Establish relationships with interested parties to ensure statutory sustainability licences/permits/demands are applied for and issued efficiently, and that sustainability considerations are included throughout the programme.

Health & Safety Objectives:

• Assist in developing workplace safety procedures.
• Promote workplace safety standards and procedures.
• Immediately report any unsafe acts, conditions or accidents.
• Participate in workplace safety inspections.
• Assist the health and safety team in achieving high standards of workplace safety.
• Assist the health and safety team in carrying out safety audits.
• Continuously promote and influence a positive safety culture.
• Review and endorse safety procedures and standards.
• Pro-actively participate in senior management safety tours.
• Provide strategic leadership of all programme health, safety and environment initiatives.

Technical Skills:

• Strong programme/project sustainability background.
• Strong analytical skills and report writing skills.
• Good understanding of the built environment.
• Lead ISO 14001 Auditor (IEMA approved).

Requirements

A Head of Sustainability will, through experience or through professional qualification, have:

• Experience of working on large high profile complex capital programmes.
• Experience delivering sustainability metrics in the construction and engineering industry (preferably with experience/knowledge of GSAS).
• Technical qualifications to at least degree level in a sustainability related subject, ideally with post-graduate qualification(s).
• A minimum of 15 years post-graduation experience working in sustainable construction management.
• Relevant professional membership.
