The Role


The Role


Based in Doha, Qatar, Sidra Medical and Research Center will be the Middle East's first academic medical center designed to the best international standards. Scheduled to open in early 2013, Sidra will provide world class, patient-focused, clinical services for women and children, medical education, and biomedical research in an ultra-modern, all-digital facility.Reporting directly to the Project Director for Research, the Interim Consultant for Research Administration will play a key role in the establishment of the Research Administration Department, including functional units of pre-award/contracts, compliance, and post-award.
The position will be responsible for developing the administrative and operational infrastructure needed to develop and grow a vibrant research program at Sidra, including the implementation of the Grant Management Suite with Sidra's Lawson ERP system, and the continuing development of complimentary systems and subsequent training activities. The post holder will also assist in establishing relevant policies and procedure.

* Responsible for the implementation of electronic research administration systems.
* Participating in establishing all research administrative functions for pre-award/contracts, compliance and post-award, including recruitment, hiring, orientation and budget development.
* Advise and input to the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure appropriate management of research; play a key role in developing a research manual for researchers and support staff.
* Create a training program to educate administrators and investigators about sponsor regulations and Sidra policies, procedures and practices.
* To contribute to Research's strategic development, and identification of objectives and priorities.
* To advise the Project Director on the practicability of proposed strategic directions and manage the implementation of agreed strategy within Research Division (RD)
* To establish systems to effectively monitor progress against RD's business plan.
* To develop within procedure and with the assistance of finance, robust financial controls procedures to monitor RD financial transactions.
* To establish, in co-ordination with lab manager, the management of the RD's space, including buildings, equipment, materials and space plans.
* Identify sponsored funding opportunities aligned with Sidra strategy and strengths.
* Nurture a collaborative relationship with all other areas of the Sidra organization to achieve the organization's mission and goals.
* Other duties as requested by Project Director from time to time.

* Educated to degree level with a minimum of 5 years experience, within an academic research, healthcare, or similar administration environment.
* Demonstrable experienced of contributing to the strategic direction of a department and presenting to committees or groups.
* Experience of preparing and managing financial budgets.
* Experience of personnel management, including recruitment and selection of staff, retention, performance management, and staff development.
* Working knowledge of the scientific grant system and the major funding bodies, and of current issues affecting the research funding sector.
* Experience in policy development and implementation.
* Experience with electronic research administration systems.
* A minimum of 5 years experience working in an academic or general administration within a healthcare/biomedical Institution.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate sensitively and tactfully, both orally and in writing, with individuals at all levels and from diverse cultures within the Sidra and with external organizations.
* Excellent problem solving skills.
* Ability to identify important problems, analyze, propose and implement solutions.
* Skill at creating collaborative and positive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders important to the Sidra research mission.
