Employment: Full Time

Position Summary:

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for supporting the refinery’s production by providing an analysis service for the quality control of raw materials, intermediate and final products. The role has quality and cost aspects, all of which must be achieved whilst adhering to ICUMSA and other internationally recognised methods. To do that, he or she must apply an understanding of the refinery process, watching trends and taking appropriate action to mitigate or enhance them as necessary. He/she should be very conversant in Statistical Process Control (SPC) and the ongoing development of industrial laboratory techniques.
The Laboratory Manager must manage a small team with a high level of experience and educational standards.

Responsibilities / Duties:

• Ensure that the refinery produces the final product(s) according to specification:

a. Develops and implements quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, proper functioning of laboratory equipment and compliance with local and international regulations; prepares and maintains applicable records;

b. Participates in proficiency testing with international laboratory and ensures that the company laboratory is at an international standard;

c. Keeps up to date with chemical and microbiological analysis including the cause and effect of non-sucrose and the various microorganisms which could be prominent in a sugar refinery;

• Ensure that the laboratory functions efficiently at all times,

a. Monitors quality control, quality assurance, safety and inspection control practices to assure compliance with external and internal regulations;

b. Maintains sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for performance of duties;
c. Interprets accrediting agencies standards or guidelines for testing program and translates requirements into policies and procedures; initiates corrective action as soon as deficiency is identified, complete checklist and other information sheets required and co-ordinates onsite inspection of sections for which responsible;

d. Provides advance problem solving, troubleshooting and interpretation of test results;

e. Ensures that his/her department can react correctly to any breakdown or plant modification;

f. Build and then manage the departmental team:

g. Agrees an initial manning plan with the Refinery Manager and then regularly updates that over time;

h. Recruits the members of the team in close liaison with the Administration / Human Resources Manager;

i. Agrees with his/her staff the procedures required to ensure that the engineering department is adequately manned at all times;

j. Provides the leadership required for such a team, including good communication, sensible delegation, the development of a succession plan and the establishment plus administration of a discipline procedure;

k. Develops the members of the team reporting to him/her, identifying suitable training actively seeking opportunities for obtaining that training;

• Support the obtaining and then maintenance of appropriate certifications:

a. Undertakes whatever assignments are given under the various certification plans;
Inter Office Relations:

Direct communication with Production Manager, Technical Manager, Quality Assurance Manager and Health and Safety Manager. Occasional meetings with Human Resources Division

Requirements

Experience / Education:

• A university degree in applied chemistry or sugar technology or food technology.
• At least 10 years’ experience in sugar refining with 5 years at international level. Previous experience in a similar position is essential.
• Training in laboratory safety plus team leadership is essential; training in budget preparation and cost management is required; training in Statistical Process Control is required.
• Good command of written and spoken English is essential, as are good management skills; the full range of skills implied by the qualification and experience are also essential;
