Job description / Role

In 2011, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said decreed the establishment of a new university dedicated to scholarship and research in science and technology with a mandate to expand the nation’s higher education capacity significantly and spur economic growth.

Our Client, the University of Oman Project (UOP) is the project phase of the University of Oman which is expected to become operational by August 2018.

The University of Oman Project seek to employ the services of a Legal Expert to join its project team.

The successful candidate is expected among other things to:
- Play key role in the definition and development of the UOP and University of Oman’s policies, procedures and programs as well as provide continuing counsel and guidance on legal matters
- Provide legal oversight on issues related to higher education, risk management, and University of Oman contracts and agreements such as joint ventures with other universities, healthcare enterprises, business entities, non-profits, or governmental organizations locally or abroad
- Provide counsel and advice concerning compliance with local and related international regulations affecting institutions of higher education including but not limited to teaching, research, intellectual property rights etc
- Assume ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the UOP office conducts its business in compliance with applicable laws and regulations and good governance practices
- Bring legal issues and concerns to the attention of the UOP leadership team and assist in developing related University policies
- Provide legal representation, advice, and opinions in monitoring and resolving disputes that may lead to litigation

Requirements

- Master of Laws Degree (LLM) or equivalent.
- 15 to 20 years of legal practice experience with at least 8 years in a senior position in a law firm, corporation, government agency, or other organization.
- Experience as general counsel of a large non-profit, for-profit, or governmental educational institution is preferred
