The RoleThe Roleeonatal pediatricians, who are also known as a neonatologist, specialize in caring for high risk mothers and fetuses during pregnancy, as well as babies with health issues after birth. Training Requirements Neonatologists are medical doctors who have had at least four years of medical school, three years of residency training in general pediatrics, three years of additional training in newborn intensive care, certification from the American Board of Pediatrics and by the Sub-Board of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. Types of Treatment Neonatologists assist in the delivery room during high risk pregnancies, cesarean sections or any other time there is concern there may be an issue with the baby. Once the baby is born, they work to stabilize and treat any condition. After babies are born and stabilized, a neonatologist will diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections and birth defects. She puts together the plans of action and coordinates the care of premature and ill newborns. Neonatologists mainly work in the newborn intensive care units of hospitals. However, they sometimes provide short-term care once the infant has been released from the hospital. The neonatologist will work to coordinate care with the baby\'s pediatrician |
