Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

Job Purpose:
- To action tasks and initiatives to change behavior and improve the team’s skill levels to deliver improved EHS outcomes
- To support the management to lead the Department to a new level of EHS capability and performance by analyzing EHS performance, recommending improvements and implementing Departmental EHS systems and projects
- This role focuses 80% on service delivery and people leadership and 20% on administration

Key responsibilities:
- Environment, Health and Safety: deep knowledge and understanding of the EHS systems used in an industrial plant. Deep understanding of Omani EHS law, EHS policies and management procedures
- The capacity to engage and influence: the Job Holder must possess the capacity to establish high-quality “adult-to-adult” relationships with leaders, their peer group and the teams for the purpose of influencing and driving changes in behavior
- Business knowledge: good working knowledge of the Smelter operating environment, including the processes, the equipment, and potential risks
- English language: Fluent in written and spoken English, including the ability to effectively communicate concepts and instructions to those who may have intermediate-level English.
- SAP: the ability to action maintenance notifications and leave requests in SAP. (Note to new recruits: these skills can be acquired on the job)

Action tasks and initiatives to change behavior and improve the teams’ skill levels to enable improved EHS outcomes
- Build relationships with the Team. Coach and advise the teams to build EHS capability and achieve change in behavior
- Deliver training programs
- Deliver Departmental Safety induction; maintain records
- Advise managers and teams on ways of identifying and controlling risks.
- Respond to EHS queries

Deliver EHS services to ensure high levels of safety and compliance
- Updating the EHS Safety Board
- Attending Safe-Start meetings. Coaching and supporting the Supervisors to ensure changes in behavior on the part of the teams
- Participating in Safe teamwork meetings and de-briefs
- Regularly checking EHS systems (permits, lockout & isolation compliance, PPE, Waste Management, Fire Equipment & Systems, Mobile Equipment, Safety behavior; daily workplace inspections; daily checks of projects (constructions; modifications)
- Execute programs to communicate EHS goals and performance and to continually reinforce key messages (eg: set up Departmental EHS bulletins, an EHS communications board)
- Execute programs to engage the teams and change behaviors (eg: an EHS competition)
- Action accident investigations and analyses, inspections, risk analyses, on-site observations and interventions
- Arrange Emergency drills and simulations
- Conduct field evaluations (observation, inspection, evaluation) conduct EHS audits
- Establish and maintain a system to ensure contractor compliance with Sohar Aluminium’s EHS systems facilitate the Department weekly EHS meetings and be aligned with the overall EHS company strategy
- Action weekly and monthly reporting, enter information into the SA Management Information systems
- Review Near Misses, Leaders' EHS Contacts, HEC (major risk focus) and mobile equipment usage (major risk focus) and record results in CAPA. Review EHS events and discuss with team leaders measure and report KPIs; present to Team Leaders and publish on Notice Board

Develop the teams to deliver a step up in EHS awareness, capability and performance
- Recruit EHS representatives from each team. Train and develop the teams
- Develop the EHS Committees to be effective agents of change (worker representative teams, Departmental Committees and Sub-Committees)
- Encourage interdependent problem-solving and full ownership of EHS, providing coaching where necessary

Build skill:

Coach leaders and teams on:
- Safe work behaviors
- EHS incident and accident investigation, analysis, reporting and remediation techniques
- Techniques to deliver effective Safe-Start meetings, on-the-job EHS coaching interactions, compliance with the SA Golden Rules and mobile equipment safety requirements

- Develop the EHS Area Representatives to be effective leaders and to deliver a step up in Area performance
- Support the management to lead the Department to a new level of EHS capability

Advise the leadership on ways to:
- Change behaviors within the workforce to engender high levels of EHS awareness
- Set stretching EHS goals and improvement targets
- Engage the teams and build enthusiasm and commitment for EHS create milestones and celebrate accomplishments

Implement Departmental systems to drive excellence in EHS performance and to support the changes in attitude and behavior
- Advise the leadership on ways to establish and enhance the unit's EHS systems. Execute the changes
- Design and execute a program of preventative measures to drive improvements in EHS performance
- Evaluate EHS programs (observe, inspect, evaluate) and systems
- Benchmark EHS systems against best practice; recommend improvements rollout new EHS systems

Administer the Departmental EHS system to ensure compliance and to drive continuous improvement
- Analyze EHS data; report progress against Departmental EHS objectives. Deliver clear, actionable EHS reports and improvement recommendations track action items and highlight outstanding items still needing to be closed off

Deliver technical advice and services to enable high standards of EHS and to deliver continuous improvement
- Advise on EHS legislation and standards and their application in the workplace
- Deliver technical and compliance advice to staff, management and project teams.
- Advise on ways to identify and control risks; respond to queries
- Respond effectively to non-routine and emergency EHS issues, including workplace incidents and injuries
- Recommend ways to develop and improve EHS policies and procedures; contribute to the development of EHS practice across the Plant
- Align Departmental EHS policy and practice with SA Corporate EHS requirements and with other departments facilitate EHS dispute resolution

Requirements

- Bachelor in an Industry or Business with 5 years relevant experience
OR
- Diploma in an Industry or Business with 7 years relevant experience
OR
- High school with 12 years relevant experience
