Job description / Role
- Assist the Senior Laboratory Safety Specialist (QF R&D) with the implementation of QF HSSE and QF R&D health and safety policies as required
- Ensure that QF R&D organization complies with current QF HSSE and internationally accepted standards, approved codes of practice and guidance related to health and safety
- Work proactively with HSSE and QF R&D staff to establish and maintain a system that promotes a culture of safe working practices across the organization
- Promote and raise awareness of the impact of health and safety responsibilities
- Ensure sub-contractors conducting activities, including providing items and services that affect or may affect safety and health, carry out their work in accordance with QF HSSE and QF R&D health and safety policies, procedures and processes
- Provide a working interface and line of communication with other QF HSSE and QF R&D organizations and projects for health and safety matters
- Participate in regular site inspections to check health and safety policies and procedures are being properly implemented; identify deficiencies and opportunities for improvement, record observations in an issues management process for corrective action and continuous improvement
- Conduct audits to evaluate the effectiveness of health and safety systems and procedures, and identify, recommend, and implement corrective actions
- Conduct risk assessments as required
- Take appropriate action to mitigate the likelihood and impact of health and safety risks
- Investigate the circumstances and causes of incidents and accidents and take necessary steps to prevent re-occurrences
- Notify appropriate management in HSSE and QF R&D of any significant conditions which may impact on health and safety within the QF R&D workplace
- Ensure the safe installation, testing, calibration, maintenance and disposal of equipment
- Coordinate with HSSE and QF R&D environment staff to ensure the safe and legal disposal of hazardous substances
- Assist the Senior Laboratory Safety Specialist (QF R&D) in preparing health and safety performance documentation and reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information
- Support facility users and researchers in a range of specialized health areas, e.g., occupational exposure, ergonomics, noise and occupational diseases
- Other reasonable tasks as assigned by the Safety Manager
- Comply with and enforce QF health, safety, and environment policies, procedures, legal regulations and objectives applicable to areas of responsibility to ensure that work is performed in a safe, healthy and environmentally-sound manner
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline with 4 years of experience in Health & Safety
- Experience working in a scientific or research oriented environment (Laboratory, University, or Medical Complex) is preferred
- Advanced knowledge of current health and safety legislation and its application in a public sector environment, for example, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Regulations or recognized equivalent
- Awareness of effective health and safety management strategies and best practices
- Very good writing skills and persuasive oral communication skills in English, preferably with Arabic proficiency
- Proficiency in MS Office applications
