Our client is a Global Property Development firm who are world renown for the development of iconic mega projects worldwide. Their key projects are international hotels and resorts and well as in country city developments in the city of Doha, Qatar. Our client now seeks to recruit a Senior Legal Counsel to support the firm’s legal affairs in Qatar and provide expert advisory including:

• Provision of legal advice, clarifications and opinions to senior management to ensure the firm’s business interests are protected.
• Assist in the selection of outside counsel in managing the institution and prosecution / litigation and arbitration proceedings in a timely manner to ensure protection of best interests.

Reporting to the General Counsel - Legal; this role is responsible to:
• Provide the General Counsel – Qatar with regular litigation budget reports and updates.
• Define and implement processes for continuous monitoring of various legal issues in relation to the firm’s projects and operating subsidiaries in Qatar to ensure that all relevant legal and regulatory requirements are fulfilled to minimize the risk of litigation and disputes.
• Inform all concerned parties about statutory and contractual provisions and procedures to ensure that these are implemented in line with required standards.
• Manage litigation and legal processes for the firm’s entities in Qatar including contentious construction matters.
• Analyze and advice on the threats and merits of disputes and potential court and arbitration proceedings.
• Manage external counsel representing the firm before courts, arbitration tribunals and dispute resolution forms in all pending claims relating to the firm’s projects and subsidiaries.
• Determine appropriate defense, prevention and strategic measures to resolve dispute and defend the firm’s legal position in Qatar.
• Negotiate and recommend settlements where warranted to safeguard the firm’s best interests.
• Take the lead, together with management and other senior colleagues, in developing strategies for and undertaking deeper involvement in critical cases, including exit strategies to optimize the firm’s position and prospects for successful outcomes.
• Monitor the expenditure against budgets in assigned areas of responsibility and recommend steps to address material variances.
• Management of services from external legal provides including procurement, cost, terms of engagement, reporting protocols and ancillary services.
• Attend Board meetings and any other internal or external meetings to address legal issues to ensure the firm is protected from adverse legal consequences.
• Develop and maintain relationships with legal experts, researchers and external parties to maximise perspective and input in to legal decisions affecting the firm’s local projects and subsidiaries.
• Assist the Contract and Procurement Divisions in the preparation and negotiation of contracts with outside parties to safeguard the firm’s legal position and minimise risk.
• Handle the contract breach and termination process for beaches of company 3rd party contractors and defaults on sales and lease contracts.
• Approve contracts between the firm and outside parties in a manner that safeguards the firm’s legal position using the firm’s standardized formats.
• Approve all main business contracts between the firm’s construction projects in Qatar and outside parties to ensure correctness and accuracy.
• Participate in problem solving of various legal issues pertaining the setup of various company entities in Qatar to ensure that the firm’s legal status in compliance with local laws and regulations.

Requirements

The attributes we seek for this role comprise:
• A Law Degree is required with a minimum of 8+ years legal experience with exposure to the real estate industry being essential.
• Candidates must be conversant with litigation and/or arbitration procedures.
• Strong analytics and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and relationship management skills.
• Excellent writing and drafting skills.
• Ability to manage time and prioritize work efficiently.
• English native speaker although bilingual skills in Arabic highly regarded.
• Experience in expatriate environment is highly desirable.
