Head of Arabic Department (Head of Arabic Teachers) - Deira International School - Dubai

The Head of Arabic Department reports to the Senior Management Team and is responsible for managing the Arabic Curriculum, developing and monitoring the teachers within the department, monitoring pupil progress and report checking. A key component of the role will be to ensure the continued development of student’s progress in learning Arabic as a first and second language.

Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement Arabic department improvement plan, working in conjunction with the school’s strategic plan to move the school forward
- Carry out data analysis and chart student progress
- Manage and develop staff of 10 teachers in accordance with school’s continual professional development strategy
- Appraise department staff using Teaching and Appraisal and Support Framework
- Demonstrate outstanding teaching skills which lead to excellent results and outcomes - 10 of 30 contact hours will be dedicated to teaching
- Demonstrate excellent and innovative pedagogical practice, including the use of educational technology
- Implement workplace policies and practices
- Coach and mentor staff, providing advice and feedback
- Review and manage the Arabic curriculum both in primary and secondary schools
- Assess and monitor student progress, implementing impact plans where necessary
- Report on the progress of both students departmental teachers
- Manage the department budget and resources
- Prepare for KHDA School Inspection in accordance with criteria and follow through with action plan
- Coordinate teacher allocation and rooms
- Contribute to pupil discipline
- Incorporate Gifted and Talented into the Department
- Potentially conduct an extra-curricular activity one term out of three – 1 afternoon per week.

Requirements

The candidate should be able to demonstrate competencies in terms of flexibility, emotional intelligence, integrity, personnel management, diplomacy, time management and organizational skills, plus communication and writing skills.

- 6 years + teaching experience at a secondary level
- Experience teaching Arabic at top end International Baccalaureate level (A level experience acceptable but IB preferred)
- First language specialist in Arabic teaching
- Head of Department experience preferred; minimum requirements of coordinator/team leaders experience
- Essential to have ‘western style’ Arabic teaching experience
- Recognised excellent teaching experience and up-to-date pedagogy
- Senior exam experience
- Skills in Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Excellent communication skills, well presented and self-confident
- Regional experience beneficial / understanding of Middle Eastern culture
- Bachelor degree in Arabic Language/ Bachelor of Education (Arabic) essential
- Post-graduate teaching qualification essential
- Ability to conduct extra-curricular activities would be an advantage.
- Arabic and English
- Teaching experience in a local international school or with experience teaching in a western country or Lebanon would be an advantage
