Legal Manager (Real Estate)

Job description / Role

Work closely with Executive Director to provide timely and accurate legal advice and legal risk assessment and thereby ensure protection against legal exposure and liability

Key Accountabilities:
• Implement strategy and plans for group legal services effectively to ensure that the business receives timely and accurate legal advice which meets the statutory requirements and key local government performance targets/indicators.
• Assess the risk of entering into allocated contracts in order to ensure that the company is not exposed to uncontrolled risk.
• Meet with relevant key personnel involved in the negotiation of contracts with a view to providing legal advice in relation to the drafting of contracts to create awareness of the application of law and legal mitigation measures necessary to protect the client.
• Work closely with Director Legal to ensure that rights vis-a-vis third parties are adequately protected and procure the initiation of litigation or court process where necessary as well as procuring the defence of against any claim or legal action taken against it.
• Ensure the use of proper communication and negotiating techniques to avoid litigation where possible and achieve an out of court settlement satisfactory to both parties
• Review and negotiate simple and hybrid contracts related to the businesses with a view to preventing adverse legal exposure and evaluation of legal risk.
• Avoid litigation cases in order to keep legal costs under control. Mediate with parties in order to seek an amicable settlement of disputes
• Investigate any malpractice, misconduct and anonymous reports about malpractice in order to recommend measures in line with the labor laws and if required raise any concerns pertaining to top level cases to Director Legal for onward transmission to GCLO for his advice and action.

Requirements

• Graduate in Law or Post Graduate Diploma in Law (Masters Preferred)
• Knowledge of local laws and regulations and the business environment.
• Minimum 10 years with at least 3 years in senior managerial level
