The Project/Construction Engineer will coordinate technical activities on assigned projects, including construction. This means he/she is responsible for the safe and efficient execution of any and all work performed by contractors in the field.

This includes coordinating with contractors the hosting, on-site specific hazard safety communication, maintaining preferred contractors list, bidding all contractor work, hosting bid meetings, and evaluation and selection of successful bidders. It also includes construction site management, building decisions, execution strategy development, value engineering, and driving resolution on all contingency discoveries and PSSR items found during execution and commissioning.

The candidate may be required to develop/participate in the solution and provide an engineering design packet via a DBM (design basis memorandum), FEL (Front End Loading), detailed design, and cost estimation during various stages of the design.

The position will also plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate assigned engineering work; monitor work for compliance to applicable governmental codes, accepted engineering practices, and company standards; and ensures effective communication and coordination on assigned projects between all disciplines and all other project participants, including other engineering companies

The routine duties of this position will vary, but are likely to include:
- Participates in the development of the FEL (front end loading) design
- Develops detailed design or manages a third party EPC (engineering, procurement, and Construction) company for the development of detailed design
- Ensures that the project scope is contained
- Assists in the preparation of engineering project proposals
- Monitor and check performance to ensure compliance with procedures, standards, regulations, and contractual obligations in meeting project objectives
- Participates in Nalco/contractor meetings and resolves engineering and other project issues
- Communicates Nalco requirements to third party EPC companies, identifying and addressing design parameters and engineering problems and ensuring solutions are implemented
- Manages project engineering schedules and budgets
- Coordinates and checks engineering deliverables from third party engineering companies
- Reviews and approves project contractor invoices
- Provides project status reports
- Manages change orders to the original design
- Accounts for the successful completion of engineering projects

Requirements

- B.S. degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
- A minimum of 10 years of previous project engineering experience in a chemical/petro-chemical industry is required with strong field/construction experience.
- Strong communication (verbal & written) and presentation skills
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Understanding of engineering and design principles
- Ability to read, understand, and create engineering diagrams such as P&ID’s, PFD’s, loop diagrams, isometric drawings, and others
- Understanding of project management and construction methods
- Ability to work with other functions (marketing, sales, SH&E) within Nalco Champion
- Ability to prioritize effectively, managing multiple project for multiple clients
- Awareness of the potential environmental impact of design ideas
- Knowledge of relevant legal local regulations
- Excellent math, science, and some IT skills required
- Excellent computer skills (knowledge of SAP is a plus)
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to work within budgets and to deadlines
