Employment: Full Time

The Senior Histo Technologist, as a part of the Laboratory Team, is responsible for performing a variety of technical procedures that result in the creation of microscopic slide preparations. The Senior Histo Technologist is also responsible for the overall supervision and performance of tests in the Histology section to which they are assigned in accordance with established standards

Key responsibilities of the role:
- Works with, and liaises with, the Pathologist, the Laboratory Manager, Senior Technologists and other clinical and non-clinical staff within Mediclinic City Hospital and the larger Mediclinic Group.
- Supervise and perform histopathology tasks such as reception/rejection, accessioning, grossing, processing, embedding, section cutting, staining, mounting, and filing of slides and blocks.
- Perform quality control and ensures that sections checked accordingly in compliance to the quality standards
- Ensures cleanliness of the workplace, laboratory equipment, instruments and benches are observed at all times
- Operates quality control of the histopathology laboratory machines
- Validating new histopathology machines with the suppliers
- Performs special stains and trains other laboratory staff members on the special stain technique
- Performs immunohistochemical technique in the histopathology department
- Supervises/trains other staff in performing the immunohistochemical technique whenever required
- Validates new special stains methodology when required
- Validates new antibodies and develop the immunohistochemical services of the department as required
- Supervises and trains junior histo technologist staff members on all aspect of the pathology works
- Takes part in the quality control and quality assurance in line with CAP requirements
- Takes part on the proficiency testing as required by CAP
- Involved in departmental meetings when required
- Responsible for maintaining accurate data records for quality control in daily logbook as well as using the Laboratory information system
- Maintains, develops and implements current policy and procedure manuals for all staff in the histology section
- Maintains preventive maintenance programs on all equipment within assigned areas
- Ensures high levels of performance through active quality control programs in all testing areas
- Controls and maintains inventory levels within assigned areas
- Complies with the standards laid down by the Approved International Accreditation Standards and performs the duties necessary to support and achieve accreditation
- Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of his/her knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Liaise with counterparts/representatives from other hospitals in a professional manner

Requirements

- Bachelors degree in Medical Technology or related field from an approved College or University.
- Current license to practice as a Laboratory Technician from home country and current country of residence.
- ASCP, NCA or equivalent
- Current and valid Basic Life Support Certificate

Skills/Abilities/Experience Required:
- More than 5 years post-qualification current experience in the Histology laboratory area in a hospital medical laboratory
- Knowledgeable in Approved International Accreditation Standards or equivalent
- Expert usage of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Must be fluent in laboratory terminology and have a good understanding of regulatory agencies standards
- Has proven experience in maintaining effective reporting procedures, and control workflow, and can make accurate observations
- Proven experience in training, orientating and evaluating the job performance of various laboratory personnel
- Works independently within set guidelines
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and has experience in establishing relationships with senior management.
- Fluent in written and spoken English; Arabic language skills will be well regarded
- Good problem solving skills
- Good computer skills, particularly in MS Office
