Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

The Special Protection Systems (SPS) Engineer, will have a wide knowledge across complete grid power solutions for the power industry.

The position will integrate knowledge of power system automation (relay communication protocols and technologies) with protection to propose, design (RTDS), test (FAT), and implement complete grid solutions for customers while effectively communicating, training, and facilitating project progress. Protection, automation design and commissioning experience is also required.

Responsibilities:
- Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principals, practices and procedures of complete grid power solutions and related SEL products in order to complete difficult assignments.
- Train and support customers with the installation, commissioning and operation of automation and protection systems, both on-site and from SEL offices.
- Complete assignments that are broad in nature and require direct action and decision making.
- Complete assigned work within agreed upon schedule and budget while focusing on quality and safety.
- Collaborate with project and engineering teams in the development of project deliverables.
- Initiate regular communication with SEL and customer project management, engineering, and support groups regarding project specifications.
- Document, report and solve technical issues and malfunctions and identify/analyze any undesirable trends.
- Collaborate with other SEL marketing, sales, application engineering and development activities.
- Continuously identify, measure, and improve processes.
- Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

- B.S. in Electrical Engineering or related degree
- Six or more year’s relevant experience with electrical power systems or industrial automation system practices
- Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principals, practices and procedures, of protection, integration and automation applications for electric power systems
- Intermediate technical training, speaking and writing skills
- Willing to travel domestically and internationally
- Experience with electric power transmission, distribution, and generation systems
- Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
- Background check results satisfactory to SEL
- Negative drug test result(s)

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in project teams
- Electrical utility, consulting or system integrator experience
- Strong knowledge of protective relay applications and automation applications
- Knowledge of SEL relays
