Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching

The Applied Linguistics & English Language Teaching MA is for experienced teachers wanting to extend their knowledge and understanding of current research, theory, pedagogy and practice in ELT.

The course offers you an excellent opportunity to further your career in ELT and develop expertise in specialist fields such as language assessment and testing, materials development, teaching EAP, management and evaluation and ESOL.

Please note that we also offer an additional version of the Applied Linguistics & English Language Teaching MA. This route involves a slightly different programme of study and leads to the award of the Cambridge Delta, as well as the MA itself for successful candidates.

A 2:1 class honours degree is usually required in a relevant subject (including, but not limited to, a modern foreign language, English, Education, Linguistics, etc.). If you have a lower degree classification, or a degree in an unrelated subject, your application may be considered if you can demonstrate significant relevant work experience, or offer a related graduate qualification (such as a Masters or PGDip).

MA

Courses are divided into modules. You will take modules totalling 180-195 credits.

King's College London reviews the modules offered on a regular basis to provide up-to-date, innovative and relevant programmes of study.

Required Modules:

You are required to take the following modules:

• Linguistic Analysis for Language Teaching (30 credits)
• Principles and Practices in Second/Foreign Language Teaching (30 credits) [fast track students exempt from this module]

Second/Additional Language Acquisition (15 credits):

• Research Methods and Dissertation in Applied Linguistics/Language Learning and Teaching (60 credits)
• Sociolinguistics (15 credits)

Optional Modules:

You will take an additional 30-45 credits from a range of optional modules that may typically include modules from the list below, and may include a maximum of 40 credits from language/linguistics-related modules from other programmes at King's College London, at the discretion of the Programme Director.
