Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

Responsibilities
• Assist with the development of Nursery Medical Protocols
• Assess needs of kittens to determine appropriate placement within the nursery
• Oversee and manage medical charts and ensure information is entered into PetPoint database system correctly and efficiently
• Evaluate medical data from logs prepared by Nursery LVTs, Medical NCGs and NCGs and ensure treatment protocols are administered
• Oversee and provide specialized care for neonate cats with compromised immune systems
• Maintain current knowledge of emergency drugs and protocols
• Oversee and administer vaccinations under the request and guidance of the DVM
• Oversee the dosing, administering and logging of controlled drugs in accordance with DEA requirements
• Oversee and perform venipuncture for blood draw in order to obtain samples for diagnostic testing
• Collaborate with 91st street management team on protocols and needs of the department

Staff Development (40%)
• Train 91st Street LVTs, and Medical NCGs on how to provide clinical care for nursing cats and litters, as well as, neonates and kittens without mothers, which includes syringe/bottle feeding, injectables, topical and oral medications, and nebulization
• Attend and create mandatory staff meetings and assist with staff training classes
• Provide training to Nursery LVTs on ASPCA protocols for examining kittens and triage based on health and ability to thrive
• Other related duties as needed
• Perform related duties as assigned

Requirements

Qualifications:
• Ability to restrain or handle animals for medical procedures.
• Ability to walk, bend, stand and reach constantly during a minimum 8-hour day.
• Ability to work independently as well as be a team player.
• Basic computer skills, including use of data entry programs (Pet Point and Impromed).
• Must be detail oriented with a nurturing ability to care for vulnerable animal population.
• Must have strong interpersonal and communications skills, Training and/or instruction in care of neonate, infant or orphaned kittens, strongly preferred, Veterinary Technicians that have completed a 2 or 4 year degree and that are license-eligible may be considered for employment.
• Applicants must apply for and receive a "Limited Permit" from the New York State Education Department prior to starting employment.
