Job Description:
Is responsible for leading and managing the daily operations of the carpentry & Painting workshop, ensuring high-quality production, adhering to safety standards, and overseeing a skilled team. This role involves managing resources, controlling costs, maintaining inventory, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and meet customer specifications. Additionally, he is responsible for fostering a positive work environment, implementing continuous improvement initiatives, and maintaining effective communication with clients and senior management to ensure customer satisfaction.
Management Activities
- Overall Responsibility: Manage and oversee the entire manufacturing operations within the organization.
- Team Leadership: Supervise and motivate workshop staff, assign tasks, ensure a high level of efficiency, and facilitate training of new staff by experienced team members.
- Production Planning and Efficiency: Ensure efficient management of production processes, develop and adjust schedules to meet deadlines, and monitor progress to meet customer requirements.
- Resource and Equipment Management: Oversee materials, tools, and machinery inventory, ensure proper maintenance of workshop machinery and equipment to avoid production delays and ensure optimal performance
- Policy and Procedure Adherence: Ensure that workshop operations align with company policies, procedures, and regulations.
Operational Activities
- Adherence to Turnaround Time: Ensure all jobs executed within the workshop meet the defined turnaround times.
- Quality Control: Manage& ensure products meet high-quality standards, conduct inspections, and implement corrective actions to maintain quality.
- Staffing and Scheduling: Develop and execute staffing schedules for on-site projects at customer locations, in coordination with the Head of Projects.
- Health and Safety: Ensure healthy, safe, and hygienic working conditions for workshop staff with the assistance of the Safety Officer.
- Design Input: Provide inputs for innovative design solutions for various carpentry projects.
- Cross-Department Coordination: Facilitate coordination between the workshop and other departments, including:
- Finance: Ensure progressive billing of jobs.
- Inventory: Coordinate raw material requirements for respective jobs.
- Procurement: Oversee purchase of local products for production.
- Design: Clarify design aspects and understand customer requirements.
- Administration: Plan procurement of general items, including office and pantry supplies.
- Recruitment and Staffing: Manage recruitment and anticipate staffing needs within the workshop.
- Management Meetings: Provide inputs for various issues during management committee meetings.
- Communication: Maintain communication with Project Head to ensure their requirements are met and address any issues or changes during production or on-site execution.
- Performance Monitoring: Monitor and evaluate the performance of staff and equipment to ensure high productivity levels and timely completion of tasks.
- Inventory Control: Maintain proper inventory levels of raw materials, tools, and consumables, and ensure their efficient usage.
- Vendor Management: Coordinate with suppliers and vendors to ensure timely delivery of materials and supplies required for production.
- Training and Development: Continuously assess the training needs of workshop staff and provide opportunities for skill development and certification.
Analytical and Reporting Activities
- Production Performance Report: Analyze efficiency, identify bottlenecks, and suggest improvements.
- Cost Analysis Report: Track costs vs. budget, identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Quality Control Report: Monitor quality metrics, identify issues, and recommend corrective actions.
- Inventory & Resource Report: Track material usage, ensure efficient inventory management, report shortages/excess.
- Staff Performance Report: Evaluate staff productivity, identify training needs, and suggest improvements.
- Process Improvement Report: Identify process inefficiencies, collaborate on solutions.
- Production Issues Report: Report production issues to management with proposed solutions.
- Efficiency Optimization Report: Identify gaps, suggest methods to improve efficiency and reduce wastage.
- Workshop Activity Report: Prepare regular reports on activities, production, and staff performance.
Compliance Activities
- Compliance with Industry Standards: Ensure all processes meet industry, health, safety, and environmental regulations including waste management and sustainable practices.
- Quality Standards: Maintain compliance with company and industry quality standards.
- Budget & Cost Control: Monitor costs, ensure budget adherence, and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Labor Law Compliance: Ensure adherence to labor laws and maintain proper staff documentation.
Requirements:
Academic requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree (preferred): In Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Management, Construction Management, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Vocational Training or Certification: In Carpentry or Woodworking (e.g., carpentry certifications, trade school programs).
- Knowledge of machinery operation, safety standards, and workshop management.
- Project Management Certification (optional): Certifications such as PMP (Project Management Professional) or similar may be beneficial for managing production processes and cross-department coordination.
- Health and Safety Certification (optional): Certifications in Occupational Health and Safety or First Aid can be beneficial for ensuring compliance with safety regulations in the workshop.
Experience Requirements:
- 8-10 years of experience in carpentry or woodworking, carpentry techniques, tools, machinery, and safety protocols.
- 2-3 years’ Experience in production management, scheduling, budget management and cost control.
Technical skill requirements:
- Woodworking Expertise: Proficiency in carpentry, including cutting, shaping, assembling wood, and understanding joinery techniques.
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret and execute technical drawings for accurate construction and design.
- Surface Preparation & Painting Techniques: Knowledge of preparing surfaces and applying various painting methods for quality finishes.
- Technical Software Skills: Proficiency with project management and estimating software to track progress and manage tasks
- Project Management: Strong skills in scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation to meet production deadlines.
- Quality Control: Ensuring that all products meet the desired standards and specifications through regular inspections.
- Inventory Management: Ensuring proper handling and organization of materials, tools, and supplies to avoid shortages or excess.
- Health & Safety Knowledge: Familiarity with OSHA regulations, safe work practices, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
