We are currently seeking an experienced maintenance operative to support the upkeep and safety of our school premises. This is a vital role that ensures our buildings and grounds remain safe, functional, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors.

About the role

As our maintenance operative, you’ll be responsible for a wide range of duties including general repairs, planned maintenance, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. You’ll play a key role in maintaining the high standards of our school environment and supporting the day-to-day operations of the site.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out proactive and reactive maintenance and repairs to a high standard.
  • Conduct regular inspections across the school and associated buildings.
  • Maintain service records for plant and equipment.
  • Ensure safe storage and management of tools and equipment.
  • Operate and maintain heating and hot water systems.
  • Perform health and safety checks (e.g. water, fire alarms, emergency lighting, asbestos).
  • Manage contractors on site and monitor work carried out.
  • Support emergency call-outs and be a key holder for the site.
  • Carry out fire drills and emergency evacuations.
  • Assist with moving furniture and equipment as needed.
  • Maintain external areas and liaise with external service providers.

Skills & experience

  • Previous experience in a maintenance role; experience in an educational setting is desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of general maintenance, including basic plumbing and joinery.
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations and compliance.
  • Familiarity with hot and cold water systems.
  • Ability to work independently, use initiative, and manage lone working situations.
  • Full UK driving licence required.
