Job Summary
The Nursing manager is responsible for the coordination of health services & for providing administrative &clinical direction for the nursing personnel & coordinating immediate response to emergency situation, providing leadership and motivation to others, ensuring the provision of a quality-driven evidence-based patient service. He/she is guided by hand –over reports, nursing & center policies, procedures, acuity measures, administrative &clinical judgment, this role requires a person who is an expert in his/her field; an approachable and effective communicator; and an empowered leader.

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical
• Reflect mission and values of AMC.
• Reflect the philosophy, mission & values of nursing department.
• Adhere to the infection control policies.
• Assess, develop, implement and evaluate patient care Programs and activities in line with clinical needs and best practice standards.
• Actively participate, coordinate and direct the code blue.
• Competently provides care appropriate to age and specialty of the patient as defined by the department.
• Manages personnel effectively and analyzes workload and skill requirement to meet care needs for assigned area.
• Arrange for emergency operations and relocates personnel during emergencies
• Practices and promotes patient/family advocacy and assists with maintenance of ethical procedure.
• Practices and promotes positive patient family &staff resource person.
• Participates in and promotes quality improvement and nursing department activities.
• Functions as a leader and an interdependent team member.
• Actively participates in and promotes the development of self and others.
• Delegates preparation of reports covering such items as critically ill patients, new admissions, discharges or deaths, special procedures / pre and post Op, emergency situation encountered and private duty nurses.
• Report to nursing director or managerial personnel on ensuing tour of duty of patient’s conditions and hospital services rendered during work period.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient records.
• Respect &supports patient rights.
• Utilizes safety precautions whenever needed.
• Provide direct patient care if needed.
• Make rounds in every Ward, talk with patients, know their problems and assure them of the help and best nursing care to be given to them as much as possible.
• Anticipates management of schedules of staff nurses in all Wards and when the need arises.
• Supervises and decides if ever there will be a shortage of nurses in the Wards, and act accordingly.
• Guides and helps nurses in nursing procedures.
• Follows-up and/or processes papers for patient’s transfer to other hospitals; helps prepare the accompanying nurse regarding the ambulance.
• Report to the Director of Nursing in cases when any hospital employee is sick or admitted to the hospital.
• Reports Occurrence/Variance Accidents promptly and collects detailed reports.
• Properly endorses special cases in the Wards, Watcher’s presence without protocol, admission of VIPs, patients that need special attention, communicable diseases, etc.
• Helps the Head Nurses and the Director of Nursing in the assessment of staff; observes secrecy and decorum.
• Promotes her/his own professional and educational development.
• Established rapport with every staff and employees of the hospital.
• Demonstrates competence in performing CPR according to AMC policy.
• Maintains a strict confidentiality of information with the Director of Nursing.
• Ensures that all staff knows and understands hospital policies and procedures concerning CPR, fire, disaster, emergency codes etc.
• Refers unusual problems, incidents (i.e. disaster management, sentinel events, breach of policy, etc.) to the Nursing Director or Administrator-on-call.
• In the absence of the Administrator and Director of Nursing will act in behalf of Nursing Administration and to attend on the staff/ patient problems and any OVR relating to patient safety in collaboration to duty manager.
• Perform within standards of nursing care, practice and performance established for assigned unit/specialty, ensuring high standards of evidence-based care are maintained.
• Demonstrate observable clinical competency in accordance with hospital and unit policies and procedures.
• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programs of care that reflect the needs of the patient. Deliver patient care reflecting cultural sensitivity and patient advocacy.
• Promote an environment that enables patient safety, independence, quality of life and dignity.
• Act as team leader, delegating assignments to the staff based upon the individual patient needs. Take accountability for directing, monitoring and evaluating care provided by staff.
• Provide support for junior colleagues, student nurses, and allied health care professionals. Assist in ensuring all necessary equipment and consumables for the unit are available. Undertake other clinical activities as designated by the director of nursing.

Management
• Practice in accordance with the professional and ethical code of conduct and legal framework for nursing and ensure staff members do likewise.
• Act as a role model and inspiration to others, leading by example in regard to behavior, attitudes, conduct and appearance.
• Ensure effective skill mix, staff competence and manpower resources to meet the needs of the clinical service.
• Establish effective resource management, ensuring acceptable level of stores, equipment & supplies to meet the service needs.
• Utilize effective communication strategies to collaborate and interact with staff, patients and other healthcare professionals. Demonstrate respect and cultural sensitivity in all interactions with others.
• Participate in committees, task forces, projects and other duties as requested/delegated by director of nursing.
• Deputize for Director of Nursing as required.
• Act as a resource to all nurses on matters related to the specialty ensuring availability of current information on which to base their clinical decisions.
• Maintain awareness of current developments in the specialty and the implications these may have on nursing care, related educational Programs and expenditure.
• Plan and manage the unit schedules.
• Participate in committees, task forces, projects and other duties as requested/delegated by supervisor.
• Assist with recruitment and interviewing for all positions posted for your department.
• Conduct disciplinary actions as necessary with the ACNO/CNO. Maintain complete departmental files on each employee with education file; yearly competency file; and any disciplinary action forms. Files will be maintained for the duration of employment.
• Provide a monthly unit meeting for your staff with minutes.
• Implement strategies to control human and material resource utilization and expenditures.
• Prepare an annual equipment budget for submission, including cost and rationale for purchase. Obtain quotes for bid in collaboration with Material Management.
• Actively participate in nursing and interdisciplinary committees and contribute to the development of policies and procedures.
• Performs other tasks and duties within the scope of the knowledge, skills and experience required for the job, as assigned by the ACNO and/or CNO.

Education & Continuing Professional Development
• Ensure the provision of a learning environment to support all learners within the clinical setting.
• Ensure that all nursing staff receives appropriate orientation to the organization, the department and their job responsibilities.
• Identify educational needs of staff, establishing programs to meet these needs and contributing to the staff’s professional development.
• Actively participate in staff development and performance management. Provide feedback to staff through informal and formal performance appraisal processes.
• Provide formal and informal teaching in both classroom and clinical setting. Prepare and provide learning materials for use within the clinical area.
• Continue to develop and extend own knowledge of current trends, professional matters and new developments in nursing.
• Foster an environment that supports nursing care delivery based on the latest evidence and research.
• Assist to identify educational needs of staff, develop programs to meet these needs, engage in teaching in the classroom and in clinical setting, and help staff with their professional development
• Actively participate in staff development and performance review.
• Engage in yearly performance reviews, utilizing feedback constructively to improve practice.
• Ensure knowledge and skills are up to date and evidence-based.

Quality, Safety & Risk Management
• Adhere to and support all defined standards, processes, policies and procedures.
• Support and participate in quality initiatives and the accreditation process as it pertains to any assigned clinical area, cooperating fully with every initiative to secure accreditation.
• Ensure the assigned unit’s quality initiatives are met in terms of audit, complaints, incidents, risk, patient feedback, benchmarking, and data collection.
• Participate in the development of policies and change management activities.
• Adopt a proactive approach to risk management, ensuring risk assessments are conducted, appropriate actions are taken, and all incidents, near misses and hazards are reported.
• Ensure that any untoward incidents are documented and investigated according to the agreed procedure.
• Assist with risk assessments and complete incident reports as appropriate through relevant hospital systems.
• Participate in unit-based quality improvement activities, KPI’s and auditing activities to monitor and improve standards of care.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL:
• BSc. in Nursing
• Nursing license.
• ACLS.
• Minimum of 10 years’ experience, half of them at management level essential
• Clinical nursing skills.
• Evidence of continuous education and professional development
• Demonstrated competency in English language proficiency, computer literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.


DESIRABLE:
• master’s degrees in nursing or any related field
• Postgraduate management qualification
• More than 15 years’ experience
• Previous experience with the accreditation processes an advantage
• A record of effective leadership and interpersonal skills.
