Wood is actively seeking expressions of interest for a senior or principal telecoms engineer role to support future growth in our expanding business.
The projects team focuses on delivering across FEED, pre-FEED, brownfield, and greenfield scopes of work. In this role, you will be responsible for the execution of project work in accordance with the project execution plan, including Wood and/or project procedures on safety and quality control within the man-hour, cost, and project schedule targets.
This is a long-term assignment based in Qatar.
Responsibilities
The senior or principal telecoms engineer will be responsible for:
- Ensuring Wood and client health, safety, environmental, and quality procedures are followed and that a high standard of safety is achieved in all associated work.
- Executing engineering design, FEED, and detail engineering experience and costing estimation for proposals in telecom systems.
- Providing discipline input to scope definition and execution.
- Responsible for complete engineering document activities like preparing block diagrams, functional design specifications, datasheets, material requisitions, equipment layouts, interconnection drawings, termination drawings, and cabinet drawings.
- Developing specifications and preparing material requisitions for telecom systems.
- Participating in technical bid evaluations, vendor document reviews, and approvals.
- Managing third-party suppliers in the execution of engineering delivery.
- Preparing and developing material take-offs.
- Participating in project reviews, design reviews, audits, and other workshops as required.
- Completing site surveys and data gathering for onshore and offshore brownfield scopes of work, taking responsibility for the development of the site survey report.
- Assessing progress and procedure associated reports and input to the progress measurement system. Deriving and suggesting plans to recover slippage, correct inefficiency, and take any resulting agreed actions.
- Supporting and supervising tasks delegated.
- Adhering to and complying with relevant discipline-specific procedures and providing feedback for continuous improvement.
- Ensuring self-awareness of relevant regulatory framework, legislation changes, initiatives, and industry technology developments.
- Participating in audits and incident investigations as required.
- Coaching and mentoring as delegated.
- Supervising less experienced engineers.
- Providing input to the performance management of any direct reports.
- Being technically competent in own discipline and actively maintaining own competence according to standards while pursuing continuous professional development.
- Taking a proactive approach to personal and professional development.

Qualifications

Experience
- Minimum of 15 years' experience in IT or telecom field including security and safety, wired and wireless communication in oil and gas projects and extensive knowledge in LAN and WAN, ACS, UHF/VHF radio, CCTV, FOC, IDS, PAGA, hotline systems, fire alarm, and IP telephone.
- MSc, MEng, or equivalent professional qualification or BSc, BEng, or equivalent with extensive relevant experience.
- Chartered engineer or recognized equivalent experience preferred.
- Demonstrable balance of industrial experience at relevant level and position.
- Ideally, the candidate will be enrolled on the register of engineers in the State of Qatar; as a minimum, the candidate must be willing and able to progress registration.
- Experience of working in a variety of projects and phases, including greenfield and brownfield, onshore and offshore, pre-FEED through to EPC, with a focus on offshore upstream.
- Ideally has experience with Qatar oil and gas customer design standards including Shell DEPs.
- Experience with management of vendors, able to complete technical bid evaluations and oversee development of vendor scope.
- A self-motivated, proactive individual with high achievement drive and initiative, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and good organizational awareness.
- Ability to impact and influence fellow workers.
- Display analytical and innovation skills to manage new technology.
Applicants are required to:
- Be a self-motivated, proactive individual with high achievement drive and initiative, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and good organizational awareness.
- Confidently deliver assigned scopes of work independently or remotely from technical leadership personnel, with minimal guidance and direction.
- Have demonstrable experience of working within a small project office, supporting cross-discipline activities beyond their core discipline.
- Be willing and able to represent Wood in both onshore and offshore surveys, holding relevant certification or willing to undertake suitable training such as BOSIET and H2S awareness.
- Demonstrate a competent level of written and spoken communication skills in the English language.
