JOB DESCRIPTION / ROLE

Employment: Full Time

The Legal Officer oversees every aspect of the business’s legal affairs. The Legal Officer’s responsibilities includes legal affair management, regulation compliance and coordinating legal-related business interactions.

The responsibilities of the Legal Officer include, but are not limited to:

1. Legal Affair Management
• Drafts and/or reviews legal letters, contracts and agreements and monitors legal obligations under agreements to ensure compliance, as requested
• Submits quarterly reports on targets achieved together with an appraisal report to the Board of Directors
• Ensures the company fills out and submits all its legal paperwork
• Maintains a database of the status of all court matters involving the company
• Assists with media statements and media queries if necessary
• Assists in the formulation, implementation and/or amendment of company policies
• Provides sound legal advice to the company and make recommendations to management as necessary

2. Advising and Compliance Regulating
• Advises executives and employees on changes to the laws affecting the company
• Advises on civil matters that should be directed to external counsel
• Advise on statutory compliance
• Investigates if the company or a staff member does not comply with the law

3. Overseeing and Coordinating Business Interactions
• Works collaboratively with other organizations and networks where appropriate, both locally and nationally
• Attends special committee meetings and offers advice as required
• Interacts between councils and agencies under various statutes
• Coordinates work with external legal advisors
• Supports HR with certain cases (e.g. terminations or corrective actions

REQUIREMENTS

• Education - Law degree, with minimum of 3 years experience.
• Extensive experience in the provision of legal advice within a public-sector environment.
• Demonstrated ability to critically analyze issues and develop and implement effective strategies and solutions.
• Previous experience managing a number of technically and legally complex matters simultaneously.
• Experience of policy development/lobbying/litigation.
