Job Purpose

To lead the shop drawings, coordination, material selection, and approval process for mechanical work from start to finish, ensuring that all designs meet client requirements, are safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing, overseeing the development of detailed construction plans.

Key Accountability Areas

  • Product Design and Development: Analyzing project requirements and constraints to conceptualize mechanical design solutions, creating accurate and detailed drawings, including orthographic, isometric, and exploded views, using software such as AutoCAD, REVIT, and other specialized design tools.
  • Design Analysis and Optimization: Must analyze designs to identify potential issues and optimize them for performance, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Mechanical Systems Design: To be familiar with the mechanical systems for buildings including plumbing, fire fighting, etc.
  • Compliance and Regulation: Ensure compliance with relevant mechanical codes, standards, and safety codes.
  • Material Selection: Recommending appropriate materials for mechanical components based on their properties, performance requirements, and cost considerations.
  • Dimensioning and Tolerancing: Applying appropriate dimensioning and tolerancing techniques to ensure the accuracy and functionality of mechanical drawings and components.
  • Revision Management: Managing revisions and updates to shop drawings, ensuring that all changes are accurately documented and communicated to relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: Collaborating with engineers, designers, and other team members to review designs, address technical challenges, and optimize mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Quality Assurance: Conducting quality checks and reviews of technical drawings to ensure compliance with specifications, standards, and project requirements.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Engineers are responsible for creating detailed design documentation, including drawings, specifications, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Project Coordination: Coordinating with project managers and other stakeholders to ensure that mechanical design tasks are completed on time and within budget.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Ensuring that mechanical designs comply with relevant health and safety regulations and standards to minimize risks during manufacturing, assembly, and operation.
  • Continuous Learning and Professional Development: In a rapidly evolving field, mechanical engineers must stay updated on the latest advancements, technologies, and best practices.

Role Accountability

  • Modeling and Analysis: Create and review detailed 2D and 3D models as AutoCAD and REVIT of their designs, analyze models to ensure structural integrity, functionality, and manufacturability.
  • Accuracy and Precision: Ensuring accuracy and precision in all drawings is paramount, must adhere to industry standards and specifications to produce drawings that are reliable and consistent.
  • Interpretation of Specifications: Must interpret engineering specifications, sketches, and technical documents accurately to translate them into detailed drawings.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Engineers must ensure that their designs comply with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations, conducting research, staying updated on regulatory changes, and coordinating with regulatory bodies for certification and approval processes.
  • Technical Analysis: Accountable for conducting technical analysis and feasibility studies to evaluate the performance, safety, and reliability of mechanical designs.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Effective communication with engineers and designers to clarify requirements, address issues, and ensure alignment throughout the design process.
  • Adherence to Regulations and Standards: Compliance with industry regulations, standards, and best practices is imperative to ensure the safety, reliability, and legality of designs.
  • Problem Solving and Troubleshooting: Engineers are responsible for identifying and resolving technical challenges that arise during the design and development process.
  • Component Selection and Specification: Research, evaluate, and select mechanical components, equipment, and materials based on project requirements, performance criteria, and cost considerations through the procurement team.
  • Drafting Electrical Plans: Creating and reviewing detailed mechanical drawings, plans, and diagrams using computer-aided design (REVIT) software.
  • Interpreting Specifications: Reviewing technical specifications and design documents to understand project requirements and ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards.
  • Manufacturability Considerations: Ensuring that designs are manufacturable within budget and time constraints, considering factors such as machining, casting, molding, and assembly processes.
  • Adhering to Safety Standards: Ensuring that drawings comply with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations is essential to maintain safety and quality in mechanical engineering projects.
  • Meeting Deadlines: Working efficiently to meet project deadlines and milestones, managing workload effectively, and communicating any potential delays or challenges to project managers.

Academic Qualification

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.

Work Experience

6 to 10 years.
