Unit Description: Paediatric Surgery (W7)

Scope of Service

The Paediatric Surgery Unit provides the best possible care to patients and families during admission, treatment and during preparation for discharge following both simple and complex and surgical procedures. The unit accepts overflow patients from Paediatric Medical and Oncology when required.

Care is provided for children from neonates up till 13 years of age and occasionally older children still under the care of the paediatrician. One parent or sitter is expected to remain with the child throughout the hospitalization process

Patients are managed collaboratively from admission to discharge by a multidisciplinary team within a cohesive framework of policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines and bylaws. Standard precautions are followed in the care of all patients. Isolation procedures may also be initiated based on the clinical status of the patient, the presence of specific diseases and in response to expert advice from the Infection Prevention and Control Department. During times of bed shortage, the unit may be required to accept overflow patients from another service. This is coordinated with Medical, Nursing and Admissions on a case by case basis.

REQUIREMENTS

Requirements
* Registered Nurse with current Nursing license - E
* Diploma/ Degree in Nursing (Western standard) - Essential
* A minimum of two (2) years current clinical experience in specific area of practice-E
* English Language Skills: Level 1- E
* Computer Skills: Proficient - E
