Job Description

AECOM is seeking an Associate Director - Structures to be based in Dubai, UAE. The Associate Director will be responsible for leading the team to produce design information and coordinate with the relevant design disciplines. He or she will provide technical reviews and quality management, sharing technical expertise and experience with others in the company via internal technical communication and presentations.

Design will be carried out in accordance with AASHTO LRFD, Eurocodes, AREMA, and/or any other international design code as applicable. As a leader, he or she will also coordinate with the client and key stakeholders of the projects. Travel may be required to address project and client needs, particularly within the GCC. The Associate Director may also be assigned to undertake some site inspections if required.

Job Duties

  • Development of feasibility and design concepts.
  • Lead all design stages for all types of bridges and underground structures including cut and cover tunnels, box jacking tunnels, underground stations, and other forms of underground structures.
  • Provide technical leadership on structural design tasks.
  • Understand and appreciate other disciplines' requirements for underground structures such as geotechnical, MEP, and FLS requirements.
  • Possess reasonable knowledge about life cycle cost analysis of underground structures.
  • Develop solutions to complex and challenging issues using engineering methodologies and define new procedures when needed.
  • Liaise with CAD/BIM Manager for the production of drawings and BIM models.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure no design gaps and provide fully coordinated design deliverables, including support for construction supervision teams.
  • Resolve technical issues concerning conflicting requirements or complex coordination.
  • Perform quality control reviews of design calculations and drawings following policies and procedures, confirming that the technical approach satisfies client scope of services and expectations.
  • Provide specialized input to studies and design within the area of underground structures.
  • Carry out risk assessments and provision of design information for health and safety.
  • Inspect, assess, and strengthen underground structures where applicable.
  • Write reports and produce technical reports, specifications, and documents.
  • Champion innovation and demonstrate technical leadership to a sizeable team.
  • Monitor and track the budget for specific tasks within the project.
  • Play an active role in the technical development of the team.
  • Contribute as an in-house expert on specific technologies or processes.
  • Independently evaluate, select, and apply standard industry techniques to execute work assignments.
  • Identify and develop new processes that lead to improved efficiency or work quality.
  • Engage with project technical teams within a field of expertise to confirm project approach and review deliverables within budget and scope.
  • Liaise with authorities to obtain permits and approvals and discuss technical advances.
  • Develop construction cost estimates and estimates of technical effort/man-hours for projects.
  • May be required to act as Project Manager on small to medium size discipline-specific projects, with an excellent understanding of project delivery requirements.
  • Support business development and selling initiatives to expand work assignments, including managing client relationships and expectations.
  • Assist with proposals and participate in the development of bids and technical write-ups for proposals.
  • Lead communication with clients to discuss work scope, request information to support project execution, and receive client comments on draft work products.
  • Present to clients, senior leadership, and other project stakeholders to demonstrate progress and clearly explain design principles.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science or Engineering from an accredited university in a relevant subject such as Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Master of Science or Engineering is preferred; PhD is highly preferred.
  • Chartered Engineer (MIStructE or equivalent from UK) or Professional Engineer (PE from USA) is highly preferred.
  • PMP, RMP, or equivalent Project Management certificate is preferred.

Specific Skills Required:

  • Minimum of 15 years of hands-on extensive experience as a structural engineer of bridges, transportation structures, and infrastructure structures. UAE/ME projects experience is preferred.
  • Experience with various software packages for analysis and design such as Midas, STAAD, SAP, and RM Bridges.
  • Organized and proactive.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
