Autocad Draftsman

Job summary

We are seeking a proactive and technically adept individual to join our engineering team as an AutoCAD draftsman specialising in fire fighting systems. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the design and documentation of fire protection solutions for various projects, engaging directly with internal teams and external stakeholders. The successful candidate will combine excellent technical skills with strong communication and selling abilities to deliver precise drawings, facilitate project understanding, and support our business development goals.

Key responsibilities

• Develop accurate and detailed AutoCAD drawings, schematics, and layouts for fire fighting and fire protection systems including piping, sprinkler layouts, and equipment positioning.
• Revise, update, and maintain technical documentation throughout all project stages, ensuring alignment with evolving client requirements, safety standards, and company policies.
• Collaborate closely with engineers, sales, and project managers to clarify technical needs, resolve challenges, and deliver designs that contribute to successful project outcomes.
• Participate in site visits and surveys, collecting data required for accurate drafting and identifying practical solutions to on-site issues.
• Present technical drawings and solutions to clients and stakeholders, assisting the sales team in communicating system benefits and technical details in a clear, persuasive manner.
• Maintain up-to-date drawing registers and ensure version control across all documentation sets.
• Proactively contribute to continuous improvement by recommending enhancements to documentation processes, drawing standards, and system designs.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and associated drafting tools for fire protection or mechanical system design.
• Solid technical knowledge of fire fighting systems components and installation standards.
• Effective selling skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences and support sales initiatives with technical insights.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, delivering information clearly to colleagues, clients, and suppliers alike.
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple project deadlines simultaneously.

Qualifications & experience

• Relevant qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, CAD Design, or a related technical discipline.
• Previous experience in an AutoCAD drafting role, preferably within fire fighting systems or building services engineering.
• Familiarity with industry standards and codes relevant to fire protection systems (e.g., NFPA, BS EN).
• Exposure to client-facing selling or proposal support would be an advantage.
