JOB DESCRIPTION / ROLE

Employment: Full Time

The Narcotic Pharmacist will carry out specified duties with competence and due diligence. The Narcotic Pharmacist will also support the procurement, storage, supplies and monitoring/recording of Narcotics, Controlled drugs and other drugs with different degrees of potential for abuse or misuse.

Key responsibilities of the role:
- Prepares, compounds, dispenses medications with accuracy, proper labeling and instructions as to its proper usage, dosage and contains correct information on side effects as well as precautions
- Conducts inspections of medication storage and drug administration to ensure it is in line with laid down standards
- Ensure that medications supplied to In-Patients via the nursing units are as per MCME’s standard practice and within its set guidelines
- Review the Physician’s original drug orders for accuracy & suitability before dispensing the medications
- Ensure that medication orders are appropriately discussed with the prescribing Physicians for any clarifications and ensure that changes made are accurately documented and relayed to necessary parties
- Document drug related interventions, consultations and recommendation
- Participates in Drug Utilization Review programs and contributes to quality processes within the department
- Ensures that the patient billing process is adhered to
- Provides drug related information to doctors, hospital staff and patients
- Prepare and dispense compounded drugs and ensure proper labeling
- Coordinate with chronic patients for refills and follow up of prescriptions
- Ensure that medication stock levels are maintained at both Pharmacy and Ward level according to MME stock management principles
- Conducts inspections of medication storage and drug administration to ensure it is in line with laid down standards
- Orders, receives and issues stocks in accordance to MCME stock management principles
- Manage excess & obsolete stocks and accurate and proper monitoring of the stocks expiry dates
- Coordinate with suppliers for defective products ensuring proper and timely follow up
- Conduct stock takes in accordance to stock take manuals and ensure that stock take variances are addressed in a timely manner
- Documents incident reports and adverse drug reactions when needed and required in line with MME policies
- Participates in Drug Utilization Review programs and contributes to quality processes within the department
- Demonstrates professional ethics and competence in all performance output areas
- Ensures that confidentiality of patient information is maintained and adheres to the code of ethics of the profession
- Plays an active role in prevention, detection and resolution of drug related problems
- Provides drug related information to doctors, hospital staff and patients
- Ensures that client expectations are met and that quality client service principles are maintained

REQUIREMENTS

- A B. Pharm degree from an accredited educational institution, college or university.
- A current license in country of origin and/or home of record.
- DHCA/DHCC licenses
- Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate

Specialized Skills/Abilities/Experience Required:
- A minimum of 3 years relevant experience working as a Pharmacist, preferably in a Hospital setup
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain rapport with patients
- Up to date knowledge of Insurance procedures & billing conditions
- Ability to communicate calmly and effectively when counseling patients
- Fluent in written and spoken English; Arabic language skills will be well regarded
- Excellent computer skills and ability to use HIS system accurately and effectively
- Demonstrated understanding and practice of confidentiality
- Demonstrated awareness of, and adherence to, quality standards.
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Demonstrated understanding of, and adherence to, processes and procedures
- Ability to work cohesively in a multidisciplinary team
- Able to prioritize tasks and manage own workload
