The Opportunity

We are looking for a motivated, business savvy in-house legal counsel to join our General Counsel Office team to be based in Karachi, Pakistan. This role will be within the Core Business Services (CBS) service line and will handle a broad range of responsibilities supporting the MENA region as well as Pakistan. The ideal candidate should demonstrate fair understanding of the all aspects of commercial law with a nuanced view of the EY business environment and practice, as well as demonstrate legal knowledge and expertise in drafting and negotiating complex contracts and will appreciate being a critical part of the MENA operations in a fast-growing, market defining set-up across various industries.

Your key responsibilities

As a Legal Counsel within EY, you will be a focal point of contact in Pakistan to support the MENA General Counsel. Handling a wide variety of legal demands that arise in a rapidly growing market and provide business-minded legal advice to the business on the various legal issues which may include employment matters, contracts & agreements, policies, procedures, mergers & acquisitions, tenders and ongoing projects within EY.

Subsequently, you can expect to quickly become a trusted and reliable advisor to the firm as you work with colleagues across the MENA region’s business. You will be responsible for, independently drafting, revising and negotiating complex commercial contracts integral to the business. You will also gain a deep understanding of privacy and other data protection laws and regulations impacting the business and the ability to translate that understanding into actionable guidance for business teams. In addition to monitoring regulatory changes and providing legal advice and actionable guidance to the business.

As part of the in-house legal team, you will be reporting directly to the MENA General Counsel.

Skills and attributes for success

Ideal candidate should be a licensed generalist lawyer with +7 years of post-qualification experience in corporate transactional work, with a preference for at least 3 years of in-house experience with growing businesses or an international law firm.

Requirements

To qualify, you must have

At least 7 years of post-qualification experience. A proven level of English fluency, both spoken and written. Excellent business judgment, intellectual curiosity and the ability to balance legal and business requirements. Proven ability to draft and negotiate complex commercial agreements with a solution-oriented approach. Commercial awareness of the business issues facing the organisation and the ability to deal with problems in a practical and intuitive way. Proven ability to establish a high degree of credibility, respect and trust at all levels, including working collaboratively as a team player with internal business stakeholders. The capability to lead, take responsibility and act autonomously; including an ability to take difficult decisions and provide substantiated arguments. Strong personal communication skills, capable of dealing with wide range of people. Effective planning and organising skills to prioritise key areas of responsibility, tasks and projects with deadlines and the ability to thrive in a fast paced changing environment. The ability to keep calm in a crisis and to cope well with conflicting deadlines

Ideally, you should also

Have employment law experience gained in either a reputable firm (or equivalent) and/or in-house function. Have experience navigating data privacy laws and issues in a commercial context. Have Experience in or demonstrated interest in technology and innovation. Be able to operate with limited use of external counsel
