Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

• Efficient supervision of the activities of all laboratory operations, field and laboratory testing, reporting and administrative functions such that project deadlines are achieved.
• Ensure that test equipment is sufficient for the workload involved, is maintained in good working order and is calibrated and/or verified as required by relevant specifications.
• Regulate staff such that the Clients’ testing requirements are met. Notify senior management immediately should any shortfall in staffing be envisaged and of any major difficulties that may affect laboratory operations.
• After instruction on the use of the Fugro Laboratory Information Management System, ensure that data is entered into the system in an accurate and timely manner and subsequent reports are produced, checked, authorised and submitted to the Client promptly.
• Collaborate with the Quality Department to ensure that staff are properly trained, where necessary, for their specific duties and that documented evidence of this is retained.
• Ensure that all testing work is performed strictly in accordance with test specification requirements.
• Collaborate with the Quality Department for internal and external audits including those for ISO 17025 accreditation purposes.
• Maintain close relations with the Clients representatives at all times particularly with regard to results submissions and early notifications in the event of failed test results or potential result failures. Attend meetings with client on an as required basis.
• Maintain quality ‘trend’ charts, as required, with respect to trending of test results for granular and asphaltic materials.
• Produce a Monthly Report detailing testing works, staffing situation and other issues pertaining to laboratory operations, for submission to the Senior Laboratory Manager / Client. This to be submitted no later than the end of the first week of the following month.
• Attend monthly meetings with Senior Management [at site or main laboratory] to discuss monthly reports and agree solutions and timeframes on any actionable items

Requirements

• BSc in Civil Engineering or related discipline.

Skills / experience required to do the job:
• At minimum of 10 years’ experience of working in a large scale accredited laboratory, including at least 3 years of supervisory experience.
• Able to effectively organise testing work utilising a multi-national team of technicians and administrative staff.
• Familiar with ISO 17025 requirements related to the competence of testing laboratories and in particular testing, equipment calibrations/verifications and audits.
• Must be well acquainted with and have a working knowledge of Industry Standards to which testing is performed e.g. A.S.T.M, A.A.S.H.T.O, B.S.
• Must have a good working knowledge of testing requirements for granular materials such a sub base and road base materials and asphaltic pavement materials
• Independently able to analyse problems and provide / communicate solutions effectively.
• Competent computer skills including the use of data base systems
• Good communication skills in English and able to discuss effectively, operational and testing aspects with Clients senior management
