Job purpose

We are seeking an experienced and innovative subject matter expert (SME) in industrial engineering to support the optimization of complex manufacturing, logistics, and sustainment systems within defence and aerospace programs. The SME will provide technical leadership in lean manufacturing, systems integration, production scalability, and cost-efficiency strategies tailored to high-stakes defence projects. This role is pivotal in improving readiness, efficiency, and lifecycle value in support of national defence initiatives.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead industrial engineering efforts for the design, optimization, and execution of manufacturing and assembly processes in defence production environments
  • Analyze production workflows and facility layouts to enhance throughput, reduce waste, and increase process reliability
  • Provide subject matter expertise in cost estimation, capacity planning, simulation modelling, and supply chain integration
  • Drive the implementation of lean principles, Six Sigma methodologies, and continuous improvement initiatives across production lines
  • Support new product introduction (NPI) and transition to production (TTP) for defence systems and components
  • Conduct root cause analysis and corrective action planning for process non-conformities or bottlenecks
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, logistics, and procurement teams to support integrated product teams (IPTs)
  • Advise on digital manufacturing technologies, industrial automation, and smart factory initiatives (e.g. Industry 4.0)
  • Ensure compliance with defence production standards, regulations, and security protocols (e.g. ITAR, AS9100, ISO)
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports, presentations, and data visualizations for stakeholders and executive leadership
  • Requirements

    Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, systems engineering, or a related discipline
  • 10+ years of experience in industrial engineering roles, ideally within the defence, aerospace, or advanced manufacturing sectors
  • Proven expertise in manufacturing systems design, time/motion studies, and process optimization
  • Proficiency with industrial engineering tools and platforms (e.g. AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Arena/Simio, SAP, and MES systems)
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Eligibility for a US government security clearance (or equivalent if international)
  • Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in industrial engineering, operations research, or engineering management
  • Professional certifications such as Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, PMP, or Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE)
  • Experience with Department of Defense (DoD) or NATO production standards and acquisition processes
  • Familiarity with digital thread/digital twin concepts and model-based systems engineering (MBSE)
  • Only applicants meeting the strict criteria outlined above will be contacted as part of the shortlisting process.
