Employment: Full Time

The primary responsibility of the Teaching Specialist will be to support students in the Foundational Sciences Curriculum of the Medical Program. This position will provide specific focus on the subjects Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics and Immunology. The principal role of the Teaching Specialist will relate to one-on-one student teaching as well as assisting with assessment.

At the request of the Assistant Dean for the Basic Science Curriculum or the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, the Teaching Specialist may be asked to take part in other educational activities as required.

NOTE: This is not a research position.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attend lectures and small group sessions in the Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics and Immunology components of the curriculum. Facilitate small group sessions as required.
- Remain current with course content and learn new content as the curriculum evolves.
- Hold formal “walk-in” office hours for small-group or one-on-one student help, as well as meet with students upon request by appointment.
- Support the students in other productive ways when necessary, including additional small group tutorial/help sessions prior to examinations or when appropriate.
- Assist faculty in the creation of practice materials for students, including quizzes, problems and answer keys.
- Participate in and/or facilitate small group conferences and review sessions as requested by faculty member.
- Assist in proctoring quizzes and examinations, as required.
- Assist faculty in USMLE review sessions.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean for Basic Science Curriculum or the faculty.

Although the typical WCM-Q staff workday is 7:30 am - 3:30 pm, students, teaching staff and faculty members often work outside these hours. As an exempt employee, it is expected that Teaching Specialist will work beyond the regular hours, e.g. during evenings or weekends, as necessary.

Requirements

- Bachelor degree (or closely related field) and a working knowledge of a North American style graduate education system.
- Some experience in a teaching-type role (e.g. tutoring, graduate student assistant, etc.) at the College level.
- Cross-cultural sensitivity, previously demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations and cultures
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Mac Mail.
- Advanced verbal/written and English communication and presentation skills.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
- Graduate degree in the discipline of instruction (or closely related field) from a North American style education system
- 3 Years of previous teaching and/or tutoring experience.
- Prior teaching experience in human anatomy would be beneficial.
- Previous research experience would be seen as an asset.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work is completed in office and classroom environment.
- The job requires extended and varying work hours to meet demands.
