Employment: Full Time

The primary responsibilities of the Teaching Specialist will be to provide support to students, faculty, and staff, and ensure smooth operation of the Writing Center. At the request of the Associate Dean for Pre-medical Education, the Teaching Specialist may be asked to support other courses and activities, including but not limited to outreach and student recruitment.

NOTE: This is NOT a faculty or research position.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
• Attend writing faculty meetings and related meetings/events as requested by supervising faculty members. Represent the Writing Center at college functions. Send periodic reminders about Writing Centre services to students, faculty and staff.
• Remain current with the course content and learn new content as courses evolve; liaise with faculty about assignments under faculty supervision, support faculty in course delivery as needed, train peer consultants and administer the peer consultant program.
• Organize and conduct small-group workshops on writing skills and common writing genres. Respond to student writing in person, online by email and/or text/video chat, and other appropriate digital media. Maintain consultation logs documenting student visits.
• Hold formal “walk-in” office hours and schedule individual meetings as needed. Support the students in other productive ways when necessary, including small group tutorial/help sessions when appropriate.
• Assist faculty in the creation of practice materials, including course folders. Participate in and/or facilitate class sessions as requested by faculty member. Review the Writing Center’s instructional materials.
• Assist faculty in proctoring and grading of hand-in assignments/papers as required.
• Assist in maintaining current course content on the WCM-Q Learning Management System (CANVAS) including uploading files, sending broadcast messages to students, etc. Develop print and online materials for practicing reading and writing skills. Assist with editing and designing print and web-based student publications.
• Assist with designing and editing web content for the Premedical Education division. Collect and prepare material for the division’s annual report.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Although the Teaching Specialist will have primary responsibilities in the First Year Writing Seminars, WCM-Q is looking to build broad support across the disciplines and program as a whole. Based on relevant skills and training, and at the request of the Associate Dean for Premedical Education, Teaching Specialists may be asked to:

• Assist in other Premedical courses within their expertise.
• Proctor during exams in courses outside their primary responsibility.
• Support students in their preparation for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).
• Assist in pre-college and/or outreach activities.
• Deliver review or remediation sessions during supervised study sessions, study breaks or summer and winter periods.
• Act as general resource/support person for Premedical faculty and staff with Learning Management System (CANVAS).
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for Premedical Education or faculty.

NOTE: To meet the needs of the WCM-Q community, Teaching Specialists may be asked to work beyond the regular hours, e.g. during evenings or weekends.

Requirements

• Bachelor degree in the discipline of instruction (or closely related field) and knowledge of the North American style education system.
• Previously demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations and cultures.
• Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Mac Mail.
• Some previous college level teaching and tutoring experience.
• Knowledge of ESL pedagogy.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
• Graduate degree in the discipline of instruction (or closely related field) from a North American style education system.
• Previous experience working in a Writing Center and teaching writing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Work is completed principally in an office environment.
• The job requires extended and varying work hours to meet demands.
