Job description / Role
The Medical Oncology Unit is located in Client Hospital East and consists of 32 beds that provides nursing care for adult/geriatric patients with various solid tumor disorders including:
- Breast Cancer
- Ovarian Cancer
- Testicle Cancer
- Hodgkin's Disease
- Non-Hodgkin's Disease
- Sarcoma
- Oesophageal Cancer
- Esophageal cancer
- Lung Cancer
- Hepatocellular Carcinoma
- Bladder Cancer
Frequent Procedures/Services/Functions:
- Use of nursing process (patient assessment, planning, interventions and evaluation)
- Wound and skin care
- Bone marrow biopsy and aspiration
- Lumbar puncture
- Chest tube management
- Post Thoracotomy Care
- Blood and blood product administration
- Medication delivery including chemotherapy administration and management.
- Patient/family education
- Pain care and management
- Morphine IV/ SC Infusion
- Peripheral IV/central line (Hickman & Permacath) management
- Fluid and electrolyte management and evaluation
- Oxygen therapy and pulse oximetry
- Post procedure care
- Peripheral blood stem cell transplant [PBSCT]
- Neutropenic care and management as required
- Nutritional support (Total parenteral nutrition [TPN], lipids, weights)
- Infection control (isolation if required)
- Planning for care after discharge
- Safety management
- Psychosocial support to cancer patients and family by providing a holistic approach to care throughout stages of illness and treatment and death
- Heparin care and management.
- Blood glucose monitoring for diabetic patients as per order
- Insulin IV drip or subcutaneously according to sliding scale
- Tracheostomy care
JOB TITLE: Assistant Head Nurse
RESPONSIBLE TO:Head Nurse
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
- Provides total patient care assigned.
- Observes and evaluates nursing care effectiveness on shift. Adjust assignments based on patient acuity.
- Implements new methodologies.
- Contributes to motivation of staff for the enhancement of patient care in a transcultural environment.
- Participates in unit orientation for new employees. Assists and supports staff in the identification,development, and implementation of his/her role on the unit.
- Serves as clinical and behavioral model for staff
- Resolves unit related matters, including advising and counseling staff; refers to Head Nurse or Nursing Administrative designate as appropriate.
- Assists in preparation of performance evaluations.
- Participates in the provision of inservice and/or continuing education for the staff.
- Participates in Nursing and/or Hospital-wide committees.
- Implements policies and procedures for the unit; contributes to writing, reviewing, and/ or revising annually.
- Prepares reports and maintains records. Conducts unit meetings and maintains minutes as assigned.
- Maintains supply inventory. Reports equipment failures and initiates maintenance action.
- Follows all Hospital related policies and procedures.
- Participates in self and other's education, training and development, as applicable.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements
Registered Nurse with current nursing license from country of origin
Two years recent acute care nursing experience
