Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

The Director of Nursing Services is responsible for directing, planning, coordinating and supervising the effective and efficient use of health and medical related services for the center.

Develops, maintains, and implements nursing policies and procedures that conform to current standards of nursing practice, facility philosophy, and operational policies while maintaining compliance with CBAHI /JCI Standards.

The Director of Nursing assumes authority, responsibility, and accountability for the delivery of nursing services in the facility.

Plans, develops and implements procedures and policies that enhance the quality of life for people receiving services and assures procedures that support people managing their own health care.

Develops and implements health care related training that assures the best possible delivery of health related supports and services. Reviews training at least annually and makes modifications as needed.

Develops and maintains documentation systems for continuity of care and record storage that assures compliance with CBAHI, JCI regulations and TMC policies and procedures.

Establishes, implements, and monitors the infection control program designed to provide a safe, hygienic, and comfortable environment designed to prevent the devilment and transmission of disease and infection.

Duties:
- Leads, directs, and monitors the delivery of health care and related health and medical services. Provides direct supervision to nursing staff in the center.
- Provides effective and efficient budget management that assures the best utilization of resources.
- Provides effective staff management (hiring, development, training, performance feedback, etc.) that assures utilization of personnel to best meet the needs of the people receiving supports and services. Evaluates service needs and staffing requirements to assure needs of people supported are met.
- Communicates and interprets policies and procedures to nursing staff, and monitors staff practices and implementation.
- Participates in daily or weekly management team meetings to discuss department status, census changes, personnel, or department complaints or concerns.
- Evaluates the work performance of all nursing personnel, assists in the determination of wage increases, and implements discipline according to operational policies.
- Collaborates with physicians, consultants, community agencies, and institutions to improve the quality of services and to resolve identified problems.
- Coordinates nursing services with all other departments.
- Oversees nursing schedules to assure they meet department needs and regulatory and budgetary standards.
- Participates in the recruitment and selection of nursing personnel and assures sufficient staff are hired.
- Oversees and supervises development and delivery of in-service education to equip nursing staff with sufficient knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, quality care and respect for resident rights.
- Proactively develops positive employee relations, incentives, and recognition programs. Promotes teamwork, mutual respect, and effective communication
- Prepares or reviews infection control surveillance reports to identify trends and to develop effective actions to control and prevent infections. Submits an infection control report to the QA Committee.
- Coordinates and/or develops on-going QA activities for nursing services to monitor nursing compliance with standards and regulatory requirements through rounds, interviews, and record reviews. Compiles summary of findings for the Quality Assurance committee
- Promotes compliance with accident prevention procedures, safety rules, and safe work practices to prevent employee injury and illness and control worker’s compensation costs.
- Assures staff is trained in fire and disaster and other emergency procedures, and evaluates performance during drills
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
- Diploma in Nursing or Bachelor’s degree in nursing (Master’s degree in nursing preferred)
- Masters in Nursing or more than 7 years’ experience in Healthcare Administration required.
- Nursing Director is certified as registered nurses (RNs)

Training:
- Recommend that the Nursing Director maintain certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)

Experience:
- Minimum of 7 years increasing experience in management and nursing service administration.
- Must possess and demonstrate a high degree of leadership, organizational ability, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of long-term care management, policies, budgeting, personnel management, and census development is required.

License:
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) License in the current State. Specialty certification in a clinical specialty or related field preferred.

The director of nursing must exhibit strong leadership qualities and set a good example at all times. It is his/her responsibility to ensure nursing staff members are aware of their duties and proficiently skilled to perform them.

The nursing director should have key competencies and extensive experience in a nursing role.

She/he must remain calm in an often high-pressure environment and know how to respond swiftly and efficiently in emergency situations.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
