Job description / Role
The Supervisor of Exploration & Geology will play a critical role in overseeing geological exploration activities to identify and evaluate mineral resources. This position requires a strong technical background in geology, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to manage exploration projects from conception through execution. The person will ensure that all exploration activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry regulations, while contributing to the strategic goals of the company.
Responsibilities:
Reconnaissance and Drill Hole Planning
• Conducts comprehensive field mapping of the designated area to assess geological features and potential resource availability.
• Develops a strategic pattern for drill hole placements necessary for evaluating and delineating the mineral deposit based on field observations.
Oversight of Line Cutting and Drilling Operations
• Manages the line-cutting operations executed by the survey team to prepare sites for drilling.
• Ensures that surveyors accurately mark drill holes in accordance with the established plan.
• Creates a detailed base map of the deposit, serving as a foundational reference for all operational activities.
• Supervises geotechnical drilling operations and the collection of geological samples.
Sampling and Laboratory Assay Validation
• Monitors the logging of drill hole samples throughout the drilling process.
• Oversees the submission of samples to laboratories for analysis.
• Tracks the progress of sample analyses to ensure timely results.
• Utilizes a handheld X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzer to validate sample grades and manage drilling operations effectively.
Geological Database Management
• Establishes and maintains geological data files within the geological database.
• Inputs all relevant drilling and assay information, including collar, assay, and lithology data, into the geological model.
• Interprets data from drill holes and updates drill plans and validation sheets accordingly.
• Ensures daily updates of received data, continually refining the geological model, which serves as the basis for mining planning.
Reporting
• Prepares and submits daily drill report templates.
• Delivers a weekly report and presentation to the Geology Manager during formal staff meetings.
• Completes a comprehensive monthly written report summarizing activities and findings.
Grade Control
• Performs reconciliations between forecasted grades in operations and actual grades measured at the mining face.
• Ensures operations do not mine in areas with no economic value and that no ore is left unextracted.
• Analyzes sand tailings to assess ore loss due to processing inefficiencies.
• Conducts stockpile sampling for blending and comparison purposes, creating and updating models as more data becomes available.
Resource Management
• Assigns tasks to team members and follows up on their progress.
• Monitors costs associated with field operations to ensure budget adherence.
• Ensures compliance with operational procedures, taking corrective actions as necessary.
• Aids in the on-the-job training of subordinates and interns as required.
• Evaluates staff performance in terms of punctuality, quality of work, and timely reporting to ensure standards are met or exceeded.
• Conducts direct inspections of the work completed by subordinates.
Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS)
• Ensures risk assessments are performed on critical equipment, systems, procedures, and tasks by both the supervisor and subordinates.
• Educates team members on essential safety protocols to observe while performing tasks.
• Conducts regular health and safety discussions to reinforce EHS guidelines and decisions.
• Ensures that safety and lock-out procedures relevant to the section are well understood and followed.
• Confirms that both the supervisor and team members wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
Requirements:
• Bachelor of Science / B.Tech in Geology or Mining from a recognized institution.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• At least 6 years of experience in a mining operation.
• In-depth knowledge of the methods and techniques utilized in the geological field.
• Familiarity with company policies and procedures related to the geological work environment, ensuring compliance in work outcomes.
• Strong analytical skills to assess situations and determine optimal solutions.
• Effective communication skills to engage with all organizational levels efficiently.
• Proficiency in relevant software and tools necessary for achieving required outcomes.
• Ability to coordinate actions so that various components work harmoniously together.
• Aptitude for identifying tasks or actions that need further attention and ensuring follow-through to resolution.
• Leadership skills to guide and motivate team members, ensuring high-quality performance in outputs.
