Job description / Role

Employment: Full Time

Purpose: Collaborates with the Infection Control Officer in the planning, organization, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the center Infection Control program. Functions in all departments of the center as necessary.

Job Responsibilities / Duties:
- Performs surveillance of Nosocomial infections on assigned units according to approved definitions and criteria.
- Responsible for the epidemiological investigation of infection across the center.
- Identifies problems and issues related to infection control and consults with the Infection Control Officer for solutions.
- Documents diseases required to be reported formally to the Ministry of Health
- Initiates precautions and isolation measures for transmissible diseases and discontinues precautions as indicated.
- Makes recommendations to nursing and medical staff on appropriate isolation precautions to be used for known or suspected infectious processes.
- Participates in new employee orientation and nursing service orientation to the infection control program.
- Develops and participates in educational programs for the prevention and control of infections in assigned units and maintains records of presentations.
- Documents employee and patient exposures to infectious diseases for which approved protocols exist and follow-up is required.
- Serves as a member of the Infection Control Committee and other committees as assigned
- Participates in the development and review of Infection Control Policies and Procedures contained in the center Infection Control Manual.
- Participates in Center -wide Performance Improvement activities.
- To communicate with patient/relatives/carers and give advice relating to Infection Prevention and Control as appropriate.
- To maintain accurate patient clinical records, updating specialist patient databases as required.
- Participates in research projects addressing Infection Control issues as assigned.
- Follows all related Center policies and procedures.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

- Bachelor degree in Nursing, Microbiology, or Epidemiology required
- 5-7 years’ experience with strong knowledge base in infection control required.

Training:
- Certification in Infection Control (CIC) preferred
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).

License:
- Current registered licensure in state of employment
- Current and valid registered license. (MOH- SCFHS)

Leadership Skills:
- To be a delegate to represent the Infection Prevention and Control Team where appropriate.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial, and legal information
- Ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner

Communication / Language Skills:
- Infection Control Practioner have good communication skills to understand the problems and resolve them.
- Communication skills, which reflect the ability to work well in a team environment while maintaining respect and attentiveness to doctors, clients and fellow workers.
- Communicate the mission, ethics and goals of the organization
- Demonstrates ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Physically demanding, high-stress environment.
- Pushing and pulling heavy objects.
- Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients.
- Manual and finger dexterity.
- Hand and eye coordination.
