HOURS OF OPERATION
24 hours per day, 7 days a week

Care Ward B (CWB) is a twenty six bed ward, which provides acute care to pediatric hematology and oncology patients from 1 month to 14 years of age. The Unit consists of four negative air pressure rooms for isolation and sixteen positive air pressure rooms.
This child-friendly unit is located at the King Fahad Center for Children's Cancer.
The majority of the children admitted to the center are infants, toddlers and pre-school age, although we do admit up to age 14 years old. On rare occasions adolescents are admitted if the patient is still under the care of the pediatric hematology/oncology physician. One sitter or parent must stay with the patient to reduce trauma of hospitalization.
- Consistent use of nursing process, assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation by health care team
- Medication delivery including chemotherapy administration and management
- Central venous Lines (Infusaport, Hickman Line, Temporary CVC line and PICC line) and peripheral intravenous line management
- Supportive treatment such as administration of antibiotic, IV fluids and other medication
- Nutritional support like TPN, enteral feeding, weight monitoring and dietary instruction
- Prepare patient for procedures including Bone Marrow Aspiration with biopsy, Lumbar Puncture, CT Scan, Echocardiography and MRI
- Provides care for patients undergoing procedure under conscious sedation
- Hemodynamic monitoring
- Oxygen therapy and pulse oximetry
- Provides emotional and psychological support
- Provides care to post radiation therapy patients
- Infectious disease management and follows isolation policies
- Starts the pre BMT work up
- Provides patient and family education
- RRT/ Code Blue Team coverage

- Osteosarcomas
- Ewing's Sarcoma/PNET
- Neuroblastoma
- Medulloblastoma / CNS tumors
- Brain tumors
- Germ Cell Tumor
- Wilm's Tumor
- Rhabdomyosarcoma
- Retinoblastoma
Due to the predominance of pediatric oncology patients, CWB also provides acute care to this patient population. The most commonly treated oncology disorder includes:
