OBSTETRIC & GYNECOLOGY CLINIC / ANTEPARTUM-POSTPARTUM & NEWBORN NURSERY
(A-1) / LABOR AND DELIVERY (L&D)

HOURS OF OPERATION
• Inpatient: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
• Clinic: Sunday - Wednesday: 0730 - 1700
• Thursday: 0730 - 1600
• (The weekend in The Middle East is Friday/ Saturday)

No of Beds in A-1: 26 + Newborn Nursery

No. of Beds L&D:
• 5 Labor/Delivery
• 2 Surgical Suites
• 2 Recovery & 2 High Dependency
• 1 Perinatal Lab
• 2 Triage
• 5 Induction/Observation

Nurse Patient Ratio:
• 1:1 Ob/Gyne
• 1:2-3 in L&D
• 1:4-6 in A-1
• Average monthly patient visits to the clinic: 2500

SCOPE OF SERVICE
• The vision of the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department is to be a world leading service of excellence.
• The Fetal & Maternal Medicine section has been expanded to include a fetal therapy & diagnostic unit
• with advanced technologies and state of the art of obstetric ultra-sonography and fetal surveillance.
• It is within the division of Women and Infant Nursing that the highly specialized infertility investigation and
• treatment for male and female patients is provided. The Gynecology/Oncology Clinics provide
• consultation and continuity of care for tertiary referrals.

To ensure quality care to our patients, outpatients were aligned with in-patient units bringing the service under one umbrella to streamline and follow the patient's journey.

The multinational team provides an evidence based service to the women of Saudi Arabia and other nationalities. This is done by utilizing evidence based collaborative decision making to provide individualized, compassionate, culturally sensitive and safe patient care. Average monthly deliveries are 115 per month, with a 65% high-risk patient population.

The clinic consists of
• 3 Nurses stations
• 8 examination rooms
• 2 interview rooms
• 4 nurse rooms: assessment/clinic/NST
• 3 rooms in the OB Ultrasound Department
• 1 procedure room
• The Fetal therapy clinic has

• 1 recovery room
• 1 interview room
• 2 examination rooms
• 1 patient conference room

• Electronic fetal monitoring
• IV cannulation starts and maintenance
• Induction and augmentation of labor
• Tocolysis of premature labor
• Magnesium sulfate infusions for PET and Neuro protection
• Scrubbing and circulating for Cesarean Sections
• Circulating for obstetric procedures to include insertion & removal of cerclage, manual removal of
• placenta, perineal repairs and D&C
• Recovery of patients following surgery with general and regional anesthesia
• Pain Management including caring for patients with patient controlled analgesia and epidurals
• Caring for newborn at delivery. Resuscitation of newborns as required
• External Cephalic Version Assisting physicians with procedures in the perinatal lab including, but not limited to, amniocentesis,
• CVS, intrauterine fetal blood transfusions, cordocentesis, in-utero drainage procedures and selected
• Fetal reduction
• Ultrasounds
• Patient/Family Education
• Wound Care
• Baby Friendly Hospital Initiatives: breastfeeding and rooming-in
• Information technology/electronic charting

CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO SERVICE

Clinic
Patients are accepted for admission through the Patient Acceptance Center following approval by named designated physicians within the department. Hospital employees and dependents and hospital exceptions are admitted to the clinic following the appropriate referrals.

A-1
• Pregnant women who require care for conditions that may impact their pregnancy, delivery, or postpartum period
• Risk to the fetus who might require care for conditions that may impact their delivery, or post-delivery care
• Newborns delivered at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center, not requiring intensive care.
• Overflow patients with gynecology conditions and general abdominal surgery

L&D
• Patients who are 20 weeks gestation or more if the following criteria present
• Active labor
• Preterm labor or preterm contractions
• PROM or PPROM
• Induction of labor
• Induction of labor if additional risk factors are present (e.g. oligohydramnios, previous cesarean
• section
• Patients with suspected PET and/or eclampsia
• Insertion & removal of cervical cerclage
• Antepartum & postpartum hemorrhage
• Patients scheduled for perinatal lab procedures
• Tertiary care: Cardiac, CA, Renal Transplant, major fetal anomalies, Placenta Previas or suspected
• morbidly adherent placentae
• All other indications with agreement of managing consultant

STAFFING PLAN
• Number and Mix of Staff
• Staffing is provided by registered nurses functioning in a primary care nursing system. The Head Nurse has overall responsibility for the Unit and a Charge Nurse/Team Leader is designated for each shift and responsible for assessing patient acuity, enabling them to plan shift assignments for the incoming shift.

This is based on the following criteria:
• Complexity of patient's condition and required nursing care
• Dynamics of patient's status, including the frequency with which the needs for specific nursing care activities changes
• Complexity of assignments required by the patient
• Type of technology employed in providing nursing care

Degree of supervision required by each nursing staff member based on her/his previously assessed level of competence

Requirements

Registered Nurse with current nursing license from country of origin.

Two years recent acute care nursing experience

Note the scope of practise is obstetric nurse not Midwife, therefore KFSH cannot hire Direct Entry Trained Midwives only nurses or nurse/midwives.
