Scope of Service:
OBSTETRIC & GYNECOLOGY CLINIC / ANTEPARTUM-POSTPARTUM & NEWBORN NURSERY (A-1) / LABOR AND DELIVERY (L&D)

The vision of the department of Obstetrics is to be a world leading service of excellence in Perinatology and to achieve this goal the department expanded in size incorporating advanced technologies in state of the art of obstetric ultra sonography and fetal monitoring.

In the year 2009 the organization introduced the Fetal Therapy and diagnosis unit. To ensure quality care to our patients the Obstetric outpatients was aligned with in-patient units. Prior to this move the three units worked in isolation and by bringing the teams together as one unit it allowed us to follow the patients journey from the beginning of her pregnancy, through delivery and her postpartum and newborn care. Our purpose is to provide quality patient care. The team, comprising of staff from many nationalities, provides advanced evidence based services to the women of Saudi Arabia and other Middle East countries utilizing collaborative decision making.

SCOPE OF SERVICE:
We provide prenatal & perinatal care to ante- and post-partum women and newborns.

The Gynecology/Oncology Clinics provide consultation and continuing care for a wide spectrum of conditions including menstrual complaints, menopausal symptoms, pelvic pain, vulvar abnormalities, uterine myomas, abnormal pap smears and uterine bleeding.

• Average monthly patient visits to the clinic: 1600-2200
• Average monthly deliveries are 115 per month, with a 65% high-risk patient population.

The clinic consists of:
• 3 Nurse's station
• 8 examination rooms
• 2 interview rooms,
• 4 nurse rooms: assessment/clinic/NST
• 3 rooms in the OB Ultrasound Department
• 2 Procedure rooms.

• 1:1 1:2-3 in L&D

• Pelvic ultrasounds, including Doppler studies, Nuchal Translucency, Echo's and Biophysical profiles
• Blood glucose monitoring
• Electronic fetal monitoring

• Endometrial and cervical biopsies
• Pap smear
• Vaginal cultures
• Wound Care, clip and suture removal
• POCT
• Patient/Family Education/Antenatal Classes

A-1:
• Ultrasounds

• Blood sugar stabilization

• Pain management, including caring for patients with patient controlled analgesia and epidurals
• Newborn hearing screening
• Newborn immunizations
• Phototherapy
• IV cannulation

L&D:
• Electronic fetal monitoring
• IV cannulation starts and maintenance
• Induction and augmentation of labor
• Tocolysis of premature labor
• Magnesium sulfate infusions for PET and Neuro protection
• Scrubbing and circulating for Cesarean Sections
• Recovery of patients following surgery with general and regional anesthesia
• Pain Management including caring for patients with patient controlled analgesia and epidurals
• Cerclage removal
• Caring for newborn at delivery. Resuscitation of newborns as required
• External Cephalic Version
• Assisting physicians with procedures in the perinatal lab including, but not limited to, amniocentesis,
• CVS, intrauterine fetal blood transfusions, cordocentesis, in-utero drainage procedures and selected

Fetal reduction

Hours of Operation:
24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Position Title: Staff Nurse
Reports To: Head Nurse or as assigned

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Summary:
• Provides safe patient and family focused quality care utilizing the nursing process. Demonstrates leadership competencies while in charge or acting as shift resource/team leader.
• Contributes to the successful achievement of the Nursing Affairs strategic goals.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties:
• Provides total patient care as assigned according to the core standards of patient care and established policies and evidence based practices.
• Assumes accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care as well as discharge planning for each patient.
• Contributes to decreasing the length of stay/waiting time as per unit specific goal. Works in collaboration with Case Management to achieve goals.
• Documents all relevant information correctly, appropriately and in a timely manner.
• Reports equipment failures, safety and security issues, and/or reduction of supply inventory to Head Nurse or designee.
• Demonstrates collaborative multi-disciplinary partnerships working towards the achievements of constant improvement in quality patient care. Acts as an advocate for patients and families. Identifies ideas that will improve the quality of patient care and issues that will negatively impact on patient care outcomes, using the professional practice framework. Participates through team working and collaborative partnerships in identifying and implementing solutions through evidence based practice or research to demonstrate improvements reflected at unit level.
• Promotes a safe environment and safe patient care by embracing a safety culture and identifying areas of risk to Head Nurse or designee. Complies with policies for personal and patient safety and for the prevention of healthcare associated infections.
• Contributes to the achievement of cost efficiency savings on unit. Maintains an awareness of resource utilization, exercising care in the ordering and use of staff, equipment and materials.
• Contributes to the achievement of clinical quality outcome indicators and patient satisfaction. Leads unit based Performance Improvement activities as assigned. Contributes to special projects/assignments linked to nursing strategic priorities and professional practice model.
• Serves on unit based and divisional councils as assigned/elected. Contributes to the development,implementation and evaluation of unit activities.
• Participates in the development and evaluation of IPPs.
• Assists in promoting and sharing knowledge via mentorship in line with relevant research and evidence based practice.
• Participates in patient education programs.
• Develops and sustains own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness and maintains a professional profile. Provides documented evidence of performance and maintenance of skills consistent with position.
• Participates in new staff/nursing student orientation aimed at developing competence and performance. Assists in maintaining a suitable learning environment and acts as a preceptor/mentor in the supervision and teaching of nursing students and new staff to develop their competence.
• Demonstrates transcultural principles in nursing practice.
• Participates in the promotion and maintenance of effective communication and teamwork. Treats colleagues, patients, and visitors with dignity and respect at all times.
• Actively welcomes and provides support for new staff/students to the unit. Contributes to the retention of all staff to meet the unit specific turnover rate goal. Participates in retention activities.
• Upholds the organizational values at all times.
• Follows all Hospital related policies and procedures.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
