Course Overview

Lawrence and Nohria in 2002 presented “4-Drive Model of Employee Motivation” which comprehensively describes the process of motivation.

This model is based on research that highlights four drives of motivation which are following: the drive to acquire & achieve, to bond & belong, to be challenged & comprehend and to define & defend.

In order to fully understand employee motivation, each of the drive should be considered. Most of the organizations emphasize on drive to acquire & achieve (i.e., base pay) and ignore the other three drives.

For example, organizations rarely pay attention to the team building. This model explains that team building is an effective activity to enhance relationships or bonds among the members of the organizations. It fulfills the drive to bond & belong.

The drive to be challenged & comprehend explains that employees look for challenging work, where they can learn at maximum. Therefore, in order to promote employee motivation and engagement, managers should design the jobs in a way that it provides opportunities for learning and growth. The structure of jobs should be attractive and enriched.

Finally, there is a drive to define & defend. It indicates that a company’s repute, its moral bearing and culture can affect employee motivation. This drive can be stimulated by the company or in most of the times by smaller groups within the company such as a division.

Thus, the four drive model presents managers or employers a holistic understanding about the four important drives leading the employee motivation
