Course Overview

The need for negotiation skills arises wherever joint decision-making is necessary. The aim of effective negotiation is to create maximum value in the deal-making process. Differences are the basis for negotiation; without them there is no need for negotiation. This practical and experiential course looks at theory on negotiation in different scenarios and then puts learning into practice which is then reflected upon.

Course content

DURATION: 10 hours

SCHEDULE: 5 weeks: Classes are on Wednesdays from 3PM-5PM or 8PM-10PM, Fridays or Saturdays 1PM-3PM on request, more schedules on request.

CONTENT: The nature of negotiation situation, distributive bargaining, integrative negotiation, negotiation strategy, planning and ethics, perception, cognition, emotion and communication in negotiation, finding and using negotiation power and influences, relationship in negotiation, constituencies and audiences, coalitions and multiple parties, groups and teams in negotiation, international and cross-cultural negotiation, managing negotiation impasses and individual and differences.

At the end of the course, you should be able to understand the keys to successful negotiation, recognise and understand negotiation styles and strategies, create and identify alternatives (own and of the other party), understand and perform due diligence briefing and debriefing, understand the difference between distributive and integrative bargaining and negotiation, apply ethics in negotiation, recognise tactics used in negotiation, understand cultural differences in negotiation and understand the reason for and purpose of mediation.
