Job description

The chief engineer will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the engineering department, ensuring the optimal functioning and maintenance of the hotel's facilities and equipment. Reporting directly to the general manager, this leadership role encompasses managing preventive and corrective maintenance, leading and mentoring a team of engineers, handling departmental budgeting, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and implementing sustainability initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Key responsibilities

Lead, mentor, and manage the engineering team, promoting a collaborative and innovative environment.

Oversee the preventive and corrective maintenance of hotel facilities, ensuring operational efficiency and guest comfort.

Ensure adherence to local regulations including fire safety, WHS, and other relevant laws.

Lead capital improvement projects, handle contractor management, and carry out maintenance work as needed.

Design and implement energy-saving solutions and sustainable practices.

Monitor departmental budgets, control costs, and produce quarterly and monthly maintenance reports.

Work closely with other hotel departments to ensure minimal disruption and enhance overall guest experience.

Prepare and submit capital expenditure proposals and manage associated projects.

Qualifications

Proven experience in a similar leadership role, preferably in a hotel or large facility management setting.

Strong technical knowledge of building systems, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.

Ability to work with contractors and vendors to ensure smooth operations.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with senior management, staff, and external parties.

Knowledge of sustainability practices and energy management systems.

Ability to manage budgets and provide cost-effective maintenance solutions.

An experienced strategic leader with a background in facilities or engineering management.

Able to balance technical knowledge with strong team management and operational oversight.

Passionate about sustainability and improving operational efficiency in the hospitality industry.
